My Purpose
Posted by Allison Mack | Filed under Blog, Community, Video
Hey, team! I hope everyone has been enjoying the little video blog thingies that my dear Tabby has been throwing up over the last little bit. They’re really cool, and, well, let’s be honest… I love to talk, so they’re really fun for me to do as well. I’ve been so inspired as of late, and I’m feeling more and more consistently aware of how lucky I am to be living this life.
I’m looping around and around in my head about that grand and overbearing question “Why am I here?†Just recently, I’ve come to a somewhat vague, but kind of nice conclusion—I think I’m here to make stuff and appreciate stuff that others have made… To spread joy, passion, and enthusiasm through my own experience and expression in the world—simple, right? I kept thinking that my “purpose” had to be this ridiculously complicated thing, but when I get down to the core of it all, it feels like the only real significant reason any of us is here is to find our true selves and the things that make us unique from anyone else in the world, and to express that in a joyful and honest way. I guess the journey of life is whatever happens while you are on the quest to do so… I like this.
Maybe it is because of my fear of failure, but this seems to make the approach to failing and trying new things really exciting rather than daunting. I mean, if I could truly look at everything I do for what it is, just another way to understand and express me in the world, it would kind of take the edge off the outcome. So now, it’s just taking the steps to do so and trying to be compassionate with myself when I get off track or get confused or caught up in other things. What do you think your purpose is? It’s such a weighted word that I don’t think we ever really explore… So let’s do that! I don’t know… Chew on it if you want and share… Throw your hat in the ring. I mean, why not? Right?
Oh, and hey! I never let you all know what happened with my birthday gift that you so beautifully gave to me! I donated it to a theatre project dedicated to aiding all people in their pursuit to finding and expressing their passion in the world. The company is called World Audience Productions, and it’s run by a friend of mine who believes that we can use theatre and acting as a way for people to overcome their greatest fears and truly get in touch with what it means to express themselves in a joyful and exciting way!
I have such a passion for theatre, and I really believe that it can do so much more for this world and the people in it than just simply entertain. The woman who’s building this theatre company is working towards developing a place where all people can come and explore themselves through the art of theatre and acting. It’s really beautiful to see some of the things I value most in my life combined and actualize. Thanks so much again all of you! I’m so constantly overwhelmed by the amazing support and enthusiasm I get from all of you beautiful people! YAY!
Ciao for now,
Allison
PS—For those of you waiting for your pictures, you should be getting them this week, and I hope you all receive them okay! If you don’t receive them by U.S. Thanksgiving, please contact Tabby.

November 13th, 2007 at 12:09 amWhat about biology? Every other form of life on the planet is here to reproduce…are we excepted from this rule?
I’m of the opinion that there is no inherent purpose or meaning to life beyond the biological one. One has to choose to add any meaning beyond that.

November 13th, 2007 at 1:06 amI love the way you described your purpose in life. It’s simple and sometimes simplicity is the best way to go. I agree it’s important to find our true self and the things making us unique in life. Once we realize who we are we can now turn our focus outward — finding different ways to enrich the world and people in it by our own unique way.
Of course, It would be wonderful if everyone could agree on a collective purpose (without getting into an argument on a universal purpose) but happiness mostly comes from finding meaning within yourself and your abilities.
On the question you asked – I tend to think we choose our own paths and purpose. Currently I am building my life towards helping people; happiness and self-satisfaction ensues. “There is more happiness in giving then receiving,” and I hope to personify that.

November 13th, 2007 at 2:35 amhi everyone!
finding our place in world is the most difficult thing to do, sometimes life ends before it.
So I’m trying to change all those things that I don’t like about myself to become a better person.
And I really hope all of you can find your own place in this beautiful world and share it with everyone.

November 13th, 2007 at 5:44 amI found that it makes me feel good to be apart of a dynamic with others,
I also found that to be happy in your own skin is just as important.
So I guess my purpose is to be a good friend, to be true to yourself, enables you to be true to others.
The latter makes me feel good.
It seems one of the difficulties in life is realizing you’re not alone.
Though it can be difficult to find souls you can count on.My other purpose is Music.
I have this dream of having one of my songs used in one of my favorite t.v. shows!
Smallville’s the only one that’s still running too! haha
I hope to hear you sing more too.

You naturally Inspire me and your characters and indeed singing voice are truly awesome.Hugs and Squishes

I’m Diego, from Brazil.
I read your last message. It is very important for me to know your opinion about facts of life. You have affection with the public through different means of communication. This is fantastic! All of us have a daily purpose. I think that we can describe ‘purpose’ with a sentence written by a philosopher some centuries ago:
“What we know is a drop of water”. To discover ourselves is necessary goals, discipline and motivation.Tenha uma ótima semana (have a nice week in brazilian portuguese).

I’m happy you came up with a conclusion too.Helping a theatre company is a great idea. And you’re right, you can do a lot of good in this world. Besides, you’ve already made a positive change in this world and you continue to do so.
Have a great week Allison.

November 13th, 2007 at 10:08 amHi Allison and fellow fans,
Thanks for a new blog entry…you certainly like to make us think!
My purpose in life…mm well I guess I have in my own way thought about this topic, after all I think it was one of the reasons why I joined the police years ago and probably the same reason i decided to leave…maybe…(it could even be part of the reason i’ve had so many career paths).
I guess..like everyone all i just want my friends, family and myself to be happy and if i’m very lucky meet someone to be happy with, and be a decent human being to others and myself. After that not much else is really THAT important is it?!
You’ve really given me something to think about..
Glad to hear the birthday money as gone to a cause you are so clearly passionate about and I wish your friend the best of luck in setting up this theatre company, I hope it entertains, educates and inspires for all the people who participate..who knows we might get another actor in the mould of Miss Mack ..haha
Take care,

November 13th, 2007 at 10:34 amDearest Allison
I was thinking of “The Matrix-Reloaded” Where Agent Smith says: “As we both know, Mr. Anderson, without purpose, neither of us would be here. It is purpose that binds us, drives us, defines us! You took that from us, Mr. Anderson, and we will now take it back!” -start wicked action sequence-. The Wachowski brothers were clever to expound on a book entitled “Simulation and Simulacra” for the trilogy. It made for content heavy storytelling, which probably went over alot of heads. But if you go back and watch, you can see they examine alot of these same issues, namely:
what is purpose?
what is control?
does your religion provide control? Liberty? Discipline? Purpose?
what DO you believe?
Is it all in your head?
Solomon wrote: God made life simple. It is man who makes it complicated.
I love the way you articulate the process of coming to understand your “purpose”. Use it as an anchor, to keep you from going to far astray, either mentally, or physically.
Here is where I must make my own confession. I am a screenwriter. Now is not an especially good time to be one. But I am dealing.(Talk about struggling with purpose!)
You know, my father was a philosopher, so I grew up having these kinds of conversations. Lately, I have come to really enjoy coming to this site.“Studios are like flies. They will swallow sh*t or honey with the same enthusiasm” -Independent filmaker-

November 13th, 2007 at 10:38 amTo answer this blog, I think my purpose is to leave a trail of smiles or laughter wherever I go. I’m not a comedian by any means, but I like to lift the moods of those around me by complimenting someone or saying something that’ll elicit that smile. I know I can’t control others emotions but it sure is a neat feeling to see someone smile because of something you said.
I’m not always successful but perhaps I should stay focused on that and I might be more successful.

November 13th, 2007 at 3:34 pmI’m gonna use a great Smallville quote for this entry, more or less accurate: “I believe everyone is put on this Earth for a reason. Our task in life is to find out what that reason is.” Who knows why we’re here? I guess we’re supposed to be figuring that out, but will we ever really know? We’ll have our ideas, of course, but no one can be certain, not until the end. But heck, while we’re here, let’s have a good time, and try our hardest, and just be the best we can ever be!!
Loved the video blogs, by the way.
And you’re doing great on Smallville!! Keep up the good work!! Hopefully they’ll smooth over this whole writer’s strike and we’ll have a full season of Smallville to enjoy. =)Love from Arkansas!!

November 13th, 2007 at 5:57 pmYour view of purpose totally changes once you bring children into the world. Part of my purpose is to raise and care for my daughter, and to ensure she is guided to her purpose. The other side, I have yet to determine, and I’m almost 30. Pondering it, deciding it, stresses me out a bit, because I wonder if I am not doing what I am fated to do… but I do know when I look into my daughter’s eyes, I’m reminded that I must be doing something right somewhere. So to avoid freaking myself out, I just live day to day to its fullest and tackel whatever heads my way.
Cheers~

November 13th, 2007 at 6:21 pmThe purpose of life is to express your God-given talents with the world, in a God-given way. To reveal the light tainted and procured by the clouds of iniquitous transgression. To unveil the one who gives hope for the hopeless. Peace and forgiveness. The one who’s Grace is incomprehensible. All one may have to do is let their eyes not fail with looking upward. For that is the answer to anyone’s purpose.

November 13th, 2007 at 6:53 pmI think my purpose is to appreciate the place of every person and every thing in this world. I normally get called a geek because I have an eclectic mixture of interests, but being a “geek” isn’t a term that I shy away from at all. What is a geek anyway? It’s someone who strives to get as much information on a topic as possible as a means of improving themselves. At least, that’s my definition.
I can understand your love for theatre. It’s something that I wish I would have discovered at an earlier age, but now I can’t seem to get enough of it. And as great as it is to go see professionals, I think my favorite has to be when I get to see my students put their hearts and souls into a performance. It’s a great feeling.
Loving the V-logs. Keep it up!

November 13th, 2007 at 11:37 pmIts funny you brought this up because I feel like I havent known my purpose in the world at all the last few years. Whenever I try to figure it out it seems like I just draw a massive blank. Maybe everyone at some point struggles with this question. But after reading what you had to say Allison…I may have an idea about what my purpose is. Its possible my purpose is to teach others how to slow down and take a deep breath and realize that life is something beautiful. How it can be easy to take for granted so much and complain about little silly things. I feel like I can help people be much more gracious about life. My whole life I have been very critical about myself and saying to myself that I have no purpose. But maybe I do.

November 14th, 2007 at 12:26 am“How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people.â€
Albert EinsteinIt was the Dalai Lama (and many more I’m sure) that said regardless of religion, our very purpose it to seek happiness and something better in life. Our very motion of life is towards happiness. I love people, but I can’t say that I’m nice everyday, because of things that pop up the make life alittle more complex then one would like. Even then I think my purpose is to help people whither it’s what they need. And vice versa, people are there to help others in the smallest or even a bigger way. I think the biggest mistake is that we over look what happens through out the day, whither it’s the places that one goes or the people that one meets. May you contiue to enlighten us with your thoughts, your smile, and the entertainment you provide. Thank you Ms. Tabby, and Allison Mack. May you have a wonderful day. =)

November 14th, 2007 at 11:16 amI have always figured that “purpose” is every human beings quest to determine….A plan. A sequence. A path. A reason. We force ourselves to yearn for a purpose. We all want to feel that we alone have significant meaning. To feel that there is some greater good for us to be in the here and the now. My life has been one obstacle after another. One test after another. A challenge from the get go (I was a preemie-born early). The only true “purpose” that I have encountered is “affect.” By that I mean that my existence “affects” everything around me…. from work, to traffic, to the wind blowing, to the people that I interact with on a daily basis. Everything I do makes a difference… because if I wasn’t here…. well….. It WOULD BE different. It would just have to be different. Everything would be different. Better? Worse? I don’t know. Just different. We “cause†difference everyday with everything….. Some bad…. Some good….. Some neutral….. But it is a difference. And if I wasn’t here, someone else would be making that difference…. Someone would take my place in traffic, block the breeze that was meant to spread the seed of a flower, bump into that person who I would have let by…. and causing them to not get in their car at the right time and miss their favorite song on the radio…..just from a bump… Everyone causes a difference. Everyone is a “cause.” Everything is an “affect.”
Allison….. You cause so many people so much happiness. You affect everyone that sees, hears, discusses, contemplates your work, personality, choices, dreams. I wish I could be that kind of cause. At the end of the day, you just have to think about how many peoples’ day that you had an affect one (for example: enjoying your blog and contemplating your opinions just caused me to skip my lunch hour…. See now that just makes it more real…now I get to eat from the vending machine… Snickers… yum yum). Just try to rap your mind around that number of people. Whether it may be from your blog, your acting, your choices or even just that quick smile you give someone in the hallway. An affect is an affect regardless of how big or how small. Each day I come here to read, you affect my day, my mood, my thoughts. I am grateful for your affect on MY day. I look forward to the many years ahead… with your potential…to the many affects you will have on the world.

November 14th, 2007 at 1:30 pmIn regards to Matt’s comment, the famous evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins refers to humanity in his book “The Selfish Gene” as little more than “gene machines”, i.e., biological entities wholly concerned with gene replication. That might be a scientific answer to the question of purpose, but it is a rather unsatisfactory answer philosophically.
The question, then, is only one that each of us individually can answer. Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living”, but it’s important not to take that sentiment to any extreme and paralyze yourself in a constant cycle of self reflection.
I think purpose, like success, is not something that can be identified or determined externally. It is something that you have to decide for yourself and your purpose is what you make it. So put away the Tony Robbins CDs, close the self help book and reflect on what it is that you want. Don’t get yourself so wrapped up in the question of purpose that you forget to live. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “We are always getting ready to live but never living.”
As for myself, I know my purpose. It is to breed and raise dinosaurs for my dinosaur amusement park. I am going to call it “Cretaceous Safari.” Just wait until your sink your teeth into one of our delicious Bronotsaurus burgers. Mmmmmmmm. Oh, and dinosaur rides for the children. It’s going to be amazing.

November 14th, 2007 at 1:53 pmPurpose hmmmm, well here goes
I guess the purpose of any human is to stay alive and healthy doing the things that make you happyist. Sums it up, mostly there might be little quirks to your life you would like to add or take away but generaly thats it, at least for me, which right sucks cuz doing the thing that make me happyist hurt me. Trust me its not drugs. Drugs bad. Bikes Good. Tryed soemthing to big and broke my wrist, but i feel like there was a purpose to that. Live, learn, Repeat, Learn, Dont repeat. It simple, but humans do that to add purpose to thier lives.
Quote of my life “Do what you can with what you have, While you have it.” Very purpose filled

I love to think about my purpose, I mean I know it is to write and tell stories becuase I love doing both, but I am not exactly sure what my stories to tell are yet. And I have always thought I was born in the wrong time, or I’ve been born and lived in many other times in my other lives. I feel like I just could be plopped into any time and fit in, I am a openminded person and love pretty much all era’s. I would love to visit many and experience how life was then. Where I am actually going with this I have no idea, but the fact that my interests lie in very different ear’s has always amazed me and had me questioning what I did in other lives.

Dont speak out in fear
Search inside yourself
For the love you hold dear
Spread it out my dear one
Let the love flow
Show the world your smile
Let them see the real you

Or the car that you drive
Its the compassion you show
And the light that you shineSue copyright 2007

November 15th, 2007 at 9:05 amThank you for sharing your purpose with us! I identified the core value that shapes most of my accomplishments in a management class I took a lifetime ago. I suppose you could call it my purpose.
I use the skills, abilities, and material resources I have been blessed with to make the world a more meaningful place for others. Whether that is expressed through a random act of kindness, a challenge at the right moment, or just believing in someone when others don’t see their potential, I remember that at my core, I am no better or worse than those around me.
It’s served me pretty well so far.
Thanks again for sharing!

I dont want to go on and on about it, but look into it when you get a chance and see if you find something in it that might relate to what you were blogging about.

November 15th, 2007 at 4:04 pmI think lifes purpose is to enjoy as many things as you possibly can. Enjoy every detail, embrace everyday you have. Do as many things as you can and learn as many things as you can because you only have one life and you are only young once. Even though you never stop learning no matter how old you are. We have so many interests and we are so passionate about so many things. Sometimes its hard to choose just one profession or one craft to work on, because there are so many things to do and enjoy. I try to take my time doing things because I can’t enjoy things when I am rushing. Even the simple daily things. Taking the time to smell the coffee or smell the roses for example. Its like what Tom said in the end it is everything and it is nothing. Its all for the experience. We grow the rose to enjoy its beauty even though it will die one day we still enjoy it for the time it has to live. Thank you for this wonderful blog thingie. It really keeps our minds alive! I love all the great quotes and I am going to check out your favorite authors. This blog has really given us fans an opportunity to get closer to our favorite actress!

November 15th, 2007 at 6:05 pmI think you have the right idea. For years I have contemplated that question with just now finally beginning to understand. I, like yourself, was looking for some complex explaination to what exactly is my purpose here. I have always thought one’s purpose would be found in what profession a person chose to dedicate their life to. So I spent years tring to find a career that would help make my life fulfilling. So I jumped around from one field to another but was unsucessful and felt empty. The people that I love and that care about me had their own ideas as to what I was good at. They thought I would have been a good doctor or phycologist. Then they would observe me in different career fields and they would change their minds. So then it was acting, etc. Well i’m just rambleing on so I’ll get to the point. So like you I came to the simple conclusion that it’s not what profession you do for a living but how you are actually living. Is it full of love in both giving and receiving. Do you offer a portion of yourself to helping others in your community. Do you treat stangers with kindness or with disgust.
I’ve been lost for so long and I haven’t been living my life in this manner. It’s just been recently that I have discovered my love for photography. I have been tring to change and love others like I should and allow myself to be loved. Help anyone that I can and find the oportunity to meet, sit down and just really get to know another person who had what appears to be a completely different life as compared to mine. Just to find out that in actuality we’re exactly the same. Sorry for the long rambling comment, that I hope doesn’t sound like complete lunacy. But this was a topic that just made me… Well I cant explain. -

November 15th, 2007 at 7:18 pm“Why am I here?” The best response to this question I’ve ever come across is by Kurt Vonnegut, when the character Kilgore Trout saw this very question written on the wall in a public bathroom stall. Kilgore searched thru his pockets for a pencil, but to no avail. If he had found one, however, he would have written
‘To be the eyes
and ears
of the creator of the universe,
you fool’-RIP, K. Vonnegut
In a similar vein, James Taylor has a song (The Secret of Life) in which he writes, ‘The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time…’

I realized that Al and Miles could let that part of the mythology happen … in a meteor freakish kind of way … to open Jimmy’s eyes to the possibility that meteor freaks don’t have become corrupt and evil.
Then again, I think Jimmy became a “giant turtle man” too.

November 15th, 2007 at 10:22 pmI wrote this poem a long time ago. It’s called “Searching”:
The moon shines brightly on an ocean of blue.
The reflection of silver-white lights beautifies the view.
All the time spent searching only draws me nearer.
To the one who I know is the soul’s faithful healer.
Hidden though manifest, like an uncharted quest.
Buried with treasures that won’t let me rest.
Sometimes I get tired and I feel like I am sinking.
Is it a hope that is human nature or is it just wishful thinking?
It is said that virtue, if programmed is not virtue at all.
Although we learn from others, we are left alone for the fall.
There are so many paths, so many different ways.
Which is right? Or do they all lead astray?
There must be one. There has to be.
Life just can’t be one futile, unsolvable mystery.
Like the ocean in a night of darkness, with its mystical essence.
One light shines brightly, the others adorn its presence.
Everybody is searching. It is human nature to be.
Searching to become one of those lights that will set us free. -

November 16th, 2007 at 12:52 amHi Allison,
Since I was 6 years old, I’ve always thought that my purpose is to do something on behalf of the mankind. I know that this might sound like a wide idea, maybe like a dream. Nevertheless I also know that I can achieve everything I want if I’m really compromised with my objective. So, in a very nearby future, I can accomplish my purpose financing investigations to heal diseases, to discover new technologies or to study the DNA. There is a lot of stuff to explode. Of course, my principal goal will always be to do something to protect the earth’s ecosystem and the ozone layer; I truly wish to find a concrete solution for this.
So, you decided to donate to a theatre project. Well, what can I say?, your friend is very lucky to have your aid and enthusiasm in the project. I support you and I agree whole-heartedly with the decision you’ve taken. It seems that you’ve got to sight a vision of the project’s future. I wish the best for the company.
Bye Alli, I hope to read you soon

November 16th, 2007 at 3:45 amTo return to Matt’s comment, and Richard Dawkin’s “The Selfish Gene”: Dawkins actually does answer the age-old question, what is the purpose of life. It’s an answer solidly grounded in evolutionary biology, and it has radical philosophical implications. It explains altruistic as well as selfish behavior, it explains the pacifist’s actions as well as the actions of a tribal warlord. It is simply this: much as we might hate to admit it, we have evolved as vehicles for the transmission of our genes.
I find the idea absolutely fascinating. And not at all as bleak as it seems. The idea that something so complex and so powerful should evolve from simple natural selection is mind-boggling and inspiring.

November 16th, 2007 at 9:10 amHi Allison,
Thanks for all the video updates. They have been really enjoyable to watch.
Things have been very difficult lately for me at work, and I have been very down, and its at times like that, that you being to ponder what your purpose is.
I mean surely I wasn’t put on this earth to feel this bad right? My purpose in life can’t be to work in this job where I am bullied/harrassed to the point that I come home crying.
I am slowly learning that success, job title and salary are not the measures of success that society makes them out to be. I used to think my purpose was to be successful and make my parents proud. At the end of the day they are proud of me no matter what I do.I’ve struggled and still am to some extent to find the role in life for me. I know my current job isnt it, but I can’t decide what it should be. All this time I have been asking myself the wrong question – I needed to think bigger, and you question hits the nail right on the head.
I think we all share a common purpose, to live and create new life, and make the world a more enjoyable happy place to live. Not all of us are Mother Theresa or Gandhi, but we can be good siblings, children, parents and friends. Everyone needs someone, so our purpose is to be there for others.
I got my sign picture today, a lovely surprise. Thank you to you and Tabby for your hard work. I look forward to contirbuting to your next cause.

I’m really surprised how you ‘broke down’, so to speak, about your thoughts on your purpose in life. Me, also being someone scared of failure, never even attempted questioning myself what my purpose is in life because it would seem like to much to accomplish. Sort of. But your step by step process makes it alot easier to deal with. Of course I can’t really think of a reason right now, but I’m sure while on this journey of discovering myself I will come across that question. But I think I might wait a little. :\
Aside from this blog, I want to thank you and Tabby again for doing the video blog “thing” for us and putting so much work into it. You love to talk, and we like hearing what you say, so it work out perfect :p

Mark 16:15-16
“Go into the world. GO everywhere and announce the message og GOd’s good news to one and all. Whoever believes and is baptized is saved; whoever refuses to believe is damned.”I believe our purpose is to tell everyone about Jesus and encourage them to seek a personal relationship with him.
Romans 12: 9-19
” Love from the center of who you are;don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil;hold on for dear life to god. Be freinds who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle. Don’t burn out keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, Cheerlfuly expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality. Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath, Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t be stuck up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody. Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that ‘s not for you to do. ” I’ll do the judging,” says God. ” I’ll take care of it.” -

November 16th, 2007 at 9:10 pmTrying to break down essentially the biggest question of all is a fantastic challenge that we don’t actually face as much as we like to think that we do. It’s one thing to wonder about purpose – what’s mine? What’s anybody’s? But actually trying to answer the question? That’s a horse of a different color.
I’ve been an aspiring writer for years now. The desire took hold of me at a very young age, ran around inside me through high school, and eventually took the form of the creative writing degree that I will soon be receiving from my university. Something has just always felt very right when I put pen to paper (figuratively speaking – I actually type everything, as even I can’t read my own handwriting). And because of that feeling, it was quite easy to assume that I was put on this earth to be a writer. That was my purpose. The end. Cue the music, while I ride into the sunset.
But my initial sense of purpose wasn’t enough. It didn’t encompass who I am. I have been, and continue to be, many things in my young life – a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a student, a drama teacher, a writer. I am a contradiction. I’m wary of change but can’t stand holding still. I’m absolutely terrified of failure, yet my greatest professional loves involve facing quite a bit of rejection. All of this contributes to me purpose. And so maybe my definition of purpose has to be a contradiction as well. Maybe purpose involves so many complexities that it has to be simple: purpose is being. It is saying and doing the things that are, in essence, you, and hoping that everyone comes out on the other side okay. Now there’s a scary and wonderful thought.
Pardon the ramble. And thanks so very, very much for sharing and getting it started.

November 19th, 2007 at 11:35 amGeneralizing a bit here, of course…but there are basically
three things that keep us from our purpose in life:FEAR, SELFISHNESS…
And being distracted by something shiney…
The remedy for each of these maladies is the same:
LOVE
Perfect love casteth out fear…
Love overcomes selfishness…
And love inspires the determination to overcome distraction.
The purpose of life is to love…and learn to love better…
In big ways…little ways…generate and inspire more
love than yuck in everything you do…and all becomes
amazing! Fuels miracles!People are either helping you to do that…or making it
difficult.But when one considers that…scripturally…
One day to God is a thousand years to us…and doing the math…12 hours equals 500 of our years…
6 hours equals 250…etc.When you, Allison…reach your 26th birthday…
You will really only have been here…for 5/8 of an hour!
You will be here a whole hour at the ripe age of (a little more
than) 41 and a half years old. Many people have lived to be two hours old (83.3 years)…
Not many have lived to be three hours old. (125 years)
But I believe two and a half hours is do-able! (104 years)
I think…conceptually…we all are confident that we could
be loving and not hateful or selfish or afraid or distracted…For two and a half hours.

November 19th, 2007 at 11:41 pmHi Allison
Thanks for the photo. You found a good project for your birthday gift.
I donated it to a theatre project dedicated to aiding all people in their pursuit to finding and expressing their passion in the world.
The theatre is the base of acting. I remenber, in my french course I studied Molière. ( I live at Montreal). My daughter (16) participated two years ago to a summer theatre camp. Now she would like to be an actress.
For my purpose.
I think it’s several little things, but one of the most important is to stay healthy. With the age, I am 49, the purpose change. Be happy and be surrounded by people happy is great. I like your purpose and I can tell you that it is achieved. «To spread joy, passion, and enthusiasm through my own experience and expression in the world—simple, right?» Your character of Chloe in Smallville, Kate in Opposite Sex and Jenny in Honey …
are amazing examples. I look forward to seeing the characters to whom you give life in the future.
Do you like the improvisations? In Montreal, we have a TV show where an actor without scenario should play a short scene with actors who have a scenario. It’s a good chalenge.
Have a good day.

November 24th, 2007 at 9:39 amPart of something pretty special.
I don’t know how many times this kind of thing will have been said to you before, but as you’re right in the middle of something pretty special, i didn’t know whether it has ever come into focus just how magnificent your situation is.
I’m a huge fan of the Superman mythology and have oftern had to fight off jibes about growing up. Now you see, i have no problem in doing this as my feelings on it are pretty strong and usually after presenting my case, people can usually understand me.
People can take inspiration from anywhere but, after losing faith in a religion i was raised in, i had to not only find a benchmark for morals but also a reason for having them. Pretty extreme i know….. but still.
A bit long winded, but hear me out. You see superman has been around for years and interpreted in many ways, Smallville being the most helpfull for the adolescent teen. But i always had the end result. Superman.
But he was always the end result. Just stood for things good…. just because.
The interpretaition you are now a part of, shows how he got there. Awsome. Watching the lot back to back would, i’m quite sure, be a how-to on personal moral growth.
This has been the interpretation i have ripped from various points of the mythology.
Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!
Superman. Strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great Metropolitan newspaper fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice and…… I think you get the picture.
In actuality, Born on Earth in the midst of the depression, Superman brought hope to a nation. A character who gave people somebody to look up to, a nice ideal that if you were in trouble and were to call his name, he would drop from the sky to save you.
Superman is not about abusing the power he has for personal gain, but instead, helping others. He asks no reward or thanks but instead takes what he needs from knowing what he has done is for the greater good. That he has helped someone is reward in itself.
Maybe world events of recent times and the extreme greed and glorification of capitalism in the 80′s has left us all too cynical. Unable to accept the possibility of a person like this.
In an age where the western world seems to be losing it’s ties to religion, you can’t help but wonder what is left to govern mankind, apart from corrupt politicians that appear bent on wealth and stardom. Where do we pull our values from? Who do we look up to?
More commonly in today’s media, the characters that seem to SELL are darker and generally do what they do through some form of revenge related motivation, and there way of dealing with problems tends to be more aggressive and violent. The worrying part of all that is that the media is a product of the society in which we live. A refection of public mood.
No matter where you go in the world people will recognize the Superman logo, but so few know what it truly stands for. On my travels around the world, i learnt that the superman logo represented, to some, American capitalism. The opportunity, by the companies that own the rights to his name, to cash in. Also was the response that superman represents all the world hates about America. The most powerful force on earth, forcing it’s will on others….. So misinterpreted.
Let’s try and remember, although that a big company owns the right to the name, Superman is public property. He can be inspiration in a selfish world.
Just imagine if people tried to be a bit more like him, a bit more helpful, a bit more caring, a bit more concerned for the welfare of others. What a world it would be.
In an age of cynicism, greed and violence, superman offers a belief in the greater good, a reminder of virtue…. a light to show the way.
He shows that you can only become inferior to others by setting yourself above them. That you should lead by inspiration. Let your actions and ideals become a touchstone against which mankind may learn how to serve the common good. While it is impossible for you to interfere with history, your leadership can stir others to their own capacity for moral betterment. The virtuous spirit has no need for thanks or approval, only the certain conviction that what has been done is right. Develop such conviction in yourself. The human heart is still subject to small jealousies, lies, and monstrous deceptions. Resist these temptations as you inevitably find them.
But above all, every chance you get, love everyone who’ll let you, in any way that feels right. Those who always expect the worst mearly sit on the surface of an ocean full of riches.
People are, at the core, good. Tanks to characters like Lex, we get to see that everyone was, at one time, somebodys child, a blank canvas on which the parents could paint a good or bad picture. Let’s just remember that it’s never to late to whip out the thinners and start again.
In an age of war, religious extremes, con men and corrupt, powerfull ‘societies with secrets’ claiming possitive intentions, it’s hard to see when there is someone with genuinely selfless motivation, but they exist and it’s up to the individual to make the decision to improve from the inside out. and it’s also up to the individual to decide to stop being a victim of circumstance and upbringing and make the neccessary changes to be the best person they can be.
So a massive thank you and the character you play so well showing that everone needs people they can call friend and for your part in keeping the myth alive and making it accessable to a new generation. x

November 26th, 2007 at 9:29 pmFirst, thanks to you and Tabby for taking the time to get the signed photos out!! I really appreciate the time and effort y’all put into doing that for us. I’m happy to hear you found a charity to support that sounds like it mirrors so much of what your heart reflects. As for purpose, I believe it, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone asks, at somepoint in their lives (probably more than once), what their purpose is in life. Lord knows there are a litney of sources one can read up on to find an answer to that question. However, I believe the answer is as simple as it is profound, our purpose is to be that which we are. We all get caught up in worrying about tomorrow, and the next day, and everything going on around us that I think we forget to enjoy the now – and when you get down to it we live in the now. This eludes back to my definiton of purpose, for even as I am that I am, so to I must remember to enjoy the moment – for each moment is precious and to be treasured.
All the best to you.
Your friend in Christ.

I’m always attaching myself to what I do best, which is software engineer work. But, I realized that I’m not going to be doing that for the rest of my life. I’m going to be a CEO, with people to manage. So I think that ultimately, my purpose is to do just that. “get stuff done”.
YAY!

I’m glad that you’ve been thinking about your purpose in life. It can be an extremely hard thing to wrap your skull around, believe me. I wish all the success possible to all of your endeavours.
Blessings
