WHEN DO YOU PACK?!

Some people pack weeks in advance. Some make checklists. Some pack and unpack, forgetting that they actually wanted to wear those jeans at the bottom of the bag, and some just say “screw it” and wear the same thing the entire trip. Me? Well, to me, it’s just throwing stuff in a bag. I went to a 9:30 movie with one of my best friends last night, and as we were strolling into “Margot at the Wedding,” I announced that I hadn’t even started to pack for my three-week trip. He looked at me lovingly and laughed, “Oh Allison, it sounds like how you do life.” Ha! That’s so true! He then suggested that I write my next blog entry on this. And so here I am– exposing to everyone how incredibly spontaneous and impulsive I am in my life. Now this habit can be looked at several different ways:

  1. That I don’t sweat the small stuff. I know what’s important to me in my life, and I focus my time and energy on those things. So, in this case, I can recognize the importance in packing, so yes, of course I do it… But I find more value in the new Neil Baumbach film with a friend… So thorough packing takes a back seat, and I rush through the process of packing the next three weeks of my life three hours before departure time.
  2. I’m lazy and I don’t want to think too far in the future because that would mean taking responsibility for more than i want– sad, but true, I am still very much a child.
  3. I know that whatever I forget at home because of my lack of preparation will only add to my adventure on the other side– so really, it’s all a deliberate attempt at increasing my life experience.

I happen to believe my packing habits are a combo of all three. There are so many things to do and see– I don’t want to waste my time “preparing/packing” for an experience; I want to be living it. However, that being said, I’m disregarding the immensely valuable lesson that everything is an experience, and true freedom and joy come when you can feel fully engaged and excited by absolutely every and anything… Including counting out your underwear and matching up socks– Huh… So maybe it would be a good exercise for me to take my time more often and challenge me to find the fun in simply planning my outfits for the next three weeks and placing them in a bag like a lovely game of Tetris.

Ciao for now,
Allison

    bonjour allison,
(I’ve been taking french… my first year… and I had a really intersting day in class… it made me want to say all my greetings in french… my french teacher is pretty nutty, but we love her anyways)
    oh this is great :D
    i totally can relate…
i usually am the last one packed (procrastination) and therefore i throw whatever is in my closet or dresser into a bag.
i don’t really need the time to pack ’stylish’ i don’t really care… so i just throw in whatever is comfortable.. maybe a dress or two incase we go out. i don’t really care what people think… so i just.. well, pack. And then after I pack, I realize I put what i wanted to wear the next day or on the road or plane in my bag. For some reason, what i wanted to wear is at the bottom of the bag and requires me to dig through any clothes i actually folded. I mean im not that scattered, but im not the neatest person around (most of my friends would agree). Oh, I also usually turn red in the face with frustration when packing or have a panic attack when i feel i have forgotten something. I also sometimes yell at people in my frustration, which i feel awful about afterwards. But, thats just me and I think everyone has gotten used to it.

thanks for reading and great blog
    au revoir

How do I pack? It’s very interesting because I don’t pack weeks (or even days) in advance for a trip either. I recently was leaving for a one week trip and didn’t even pack a single thing until the night before. But when I do end up packing my things I have a systematic approach and organize everything. Kind of an oxymoron, isn’t it? Like something orderly coming from chaos.

I can actually identify with all three of the ways you said you manifest this “packing quality,” mostly with what you said about not thinking too far into the future.

There’s a balance in there somewhere that I have to achieve. I just need to find it. Thanks for the thoughts today, Allison.

Hello again Allison, I’m very adventurous, but when I do go somewhere I fine my packing skills to be quite good LOL, I’m not bragging. I’ve been married to a truck driver for seventeen years. So, I’ve learned how to pack things on the spur of the moment. When I’ve gone on the road with him, but I have’nt done that since he became a local driver. It was so much fun just to go on ,and have fun. I remember this one trip where Jimmy was trying to get direction on the CB, but could not get a response . After he gave it several attemps I got on it, and in my sweetest southern voice I could muster up. I asked for directions, and got them. Jimmy told me that I was going to get directions for him more often. I have also got a tan going down the road. I’m very spontaneous . Peace& Love Alyson

Myself I hate packing, but I’m always afraid to forget something so I check and re-check and re-re-check my check-list always a few times ! At the end I always forget something ! I’m getting ready myself to go spend 10 days in Key West in a few weeks, I hope I won’t forget anything this time.
Have a nice trip beautiful Allison.

My packing habits are teetering on the brink of OCD. I never have to unpack and repack because I think about what I’m going to pack weeks in advance. I count my underwear and match my socks (like the neat freak that I am), and I even roll-up each item of clothing before putting it in the suitcase because it eliminates creases. Creepy isn’t it? Fortunately, my weeks of mental preparation make the actual packing process a breeze. I’ve become a pro. So, speaking as someone who definitely over-thinks packing, I don’t think you are lazy or childish at all. I think you just have a life, and to be honest.. even I (the obsessive compulsive traveller) would choose seeing a great film with my best friend over packing. I have to say that I love that you analyze such a seemingly insignificant action.
    Much Love,
    Kristan

This is so not me. :-) I’m well organized, I like things to be planned and prepared in advance. And, I also have my routines. I would already have everything ready a week before leaving on a trip.:-) But, I’m learning to let go, to be more relaxed and spontaneous because, indeed, there are so many things to do and see.
Thanks for sharing. I’m looking forward to reading about your trip. Have a great week.

I always pack the night before or right before the trip, ususally I think of a bunch of stuff I could wear and throw it in a suitcase then leave the right away stuff till a few minutes before I leave. I always over pack so I have an option when I do get ready, because my mood and feel for any outfit can change in the drop of a hat. But I am not very spontainioius, I tend to over think somethings or I just think of all bad consequences right away.

I do know what I want and am very set in my way to that goal, which can be both good and bad. But I like to take me as I am and just roll with it, as long as I know my goal I feel I will always find the right way to reach it, even if it be off the path I have set and envisioned for myself.

Mostly I just wish I could travel more, I am excited for my summer so I can finally take a big trip (hopefully New York to see some Broadway musicals) with my mom and just not have to worry about anything. Can’t wait to hear about your trip. Have a great time!

How packing reflects my life – good observation.
It funny but recently my attitude to packing and I guess life has changed a bit over the last wee while.
I have always been an organsied person. I plan the holidays, from booking the flights, hotels to the tourist attractions, shows etc that we are going to see. I guess I am a bit of a control freak, in that I didn’t trust anyone else to arrange everything. That and no one else wanted the reponsibilty.

I travelled a lot on my own from about 17, so I think I had to be organised, as I didn’t fancy getting lost/stranded in a strange country. I would panic if I hadn’t looked at my itinerary every 10 minutes or checked for my passport! lol

I am slowly letting that obsessiveness die down. I am still organised, in the sense that I have one toiletry bag packed and ready to go at a moments notice (as there has been a few surprises trips lately and I am too lazy to keep unpacking it) which makes packing so much more easier. The last few trips for work have seen me pack either the night before or the morning of (depends how early I need to be at the airport)

The last few trips I have also let others organise. Granted things went a little pear shaped (having no hotel was one of them!) but like you said it added to the adventure of the trip, and its something we look back at and laugh about.

I think for something things in life you need to be organised and plan ahead but I think people should be more like you and live for the moment and appreciate good friendship over a bag full of clothes.

In terms of the future – I thought I knew what I wanted there too. I just found out I was pretty wrong about that too. I miss being a child, and I have my friend back now who lets me be at ease and digress into childish games, and I fully intend to enjoy that for as long as I can.

Enjoy your trip, and I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year where ever you spend it :)

    Hi! :)
It’s funny how this is just one of many things that can reflect exactly each person’s character. I’d rather pack with a decent time before leaving, but I would choose spending time with a close friend over that too. I’m careful not forgetting something but like Murphy says I’m always letting something behind. I’d also rather not plan what I’ll wear that detailed just so I won’t have problems with the clothes left at the end of the bag. I think it’s important setting your priorities exactly. There will always be moments in life when you’ll have to choose between things and it’s better if you can do that faster and with no regrets.

I wish everyone happy holidays and a new year full of good things.
    Ciao,
    Adrian

I will pack the night before. I hate packing. But I do a lot of last minute packing as we load the car..and things actually occur to me. For some reason…the act of loading the car triggers my brain. But..in my defense…I have to pack for myself…and 3 boys. My husband packs himself…so self-sufficient he is! Unpacking is worse…sometimes I have suitcases about the house for a number of days before I finish unloading them.

Maybe because it just means I have to do laundry again.

    Hi Allison,
I’ve never been one to be very organised,I’ll just my throw stuff in a bag then later realize I forgot something when I go and look for it. I remember this one summer I went to the beach with my friend, she was very organised she had everything written down as to what she was bringing unlike me who rushed that morning and just threw my crap in in a bag and ended up forgetting my sunscreen and sunglasses. Sometimes I think it’s due to the fact that I’m excited or it could just be that I’m lazy.lol

When I take a trip, there are six total people to pack up. So I start catching up with laundry(which is constantly accumulating!)and cleaning the house(who wants to come home to a messy house?) about a week in advance. The actual packing starts two days before departure. I try to be an organized person, and you would think that four kids would make me one. And I have definitely improved over time. But who really ever has ALL of their laundry done?!

    Greetings,

As someone who has a small measure of experience on this particular matter, I feel compelled to impart some humble advice in order that your travels will be more fruitful.
Packing for a journey consists of two parts: essentials, and trip specific.
    The essentials:
    toothbrush/paste
    razor/foam
    wash cloth/towel
    undies
socks (this one is especially important. No matter where you are, nothing beats a clean pair of socks. As a traveler, you may have already figured this one out. Walking from the airport. Walking from the hotel, etc. It puts a tax on the feet, so the socks come do come in handy).
    Second, trip specific:
Are you going to Alaska? Bring the parka.
Are you going to Florida? Don’t bring the parka.
Are you going to dine on this trip? Grab the suit.
Give some thought to where you are going. On an earlier reply, I offered this philosophy: “Adventure is what happens to the unprepared.”
As long as you know what you are going to pack, the task itself really doesn’t take that long. Give it some thought a few days in advance, maybe jot down a list, then, as you approach your departure date, grab items as you see them, and put them in your luggage.
I hope you find some of this helpful, and remember, this is a life experience you don’t want to have: “Hello, Dad? I ‘m in India, can you come get me?”

I pack the night before. I’m a last minute type of person when it comes to almost everything that I do. Which is something I really need to get out of the habit of doing. I told myself when I entered college that I wasn’t going to put off studying or my papers until the last minute, but I’ve been doing that for the past year and a half. But I know that when I go on a trip theres always going to be some sort of shopping involded, so no matter what I forget I can always buy another more cuter one when I get there. It drives my friends and family nuts when we are about to leave and Im still shoving things into my suitcase.

It’s partially because I’m so excited I can;t wait to get ready and go…and then it’s a bit because I keep worrying if I’ll forget something important. And I always tend to think oh, if it rains, I should have this to do. Or, if no one is around I should take this book to read. And what to wear in case an event pops up and all sorts of things!!
But, I would actually like to not care and just throw what I can remember in a bag and head out!
What and adventure that would be!

How do I pack? Well, when I did travel up to the cottage (I’m more of a homesbody now), I would start packing about two weeks before I left. I think it helped with the anticipation of going. That and so I wouldn’t forget a thing. One suitcase, a purse, and a carry on for my crafts, which included beading, plastic canvas, and the last couple of times, a notebook to write my fanfic in. : )

Haven’t gone up there in a long time since I pick up mail for people going away for a few weeks. However, when I start to feel insecure about something, I fall asleep and dream about the cottage. So, I might not travel there in person but I do in my dreams—and you don’t have to pack for that.

Cute. I like the way you “theorize” packing as an expression of broader psycho-social phenomena: responsibility, temporality, contingency. Packing becomes a metaphor for modernity, or post-modernity? A practice signifying the ease with which we can cross boundaries and remake ourselves and our experience through travel. Having said that, packing is easier than it used to be. No more “traveller’s cheques” (remember those?); visas are often not needed nowadays; you can get most things on the way if you forget to pack them. Packing for survival like Scott of the Antarctic is fortunately a thing of the past in this globalized world.

For me, packing is a two stage process.

Because I travel so much, I have one bag that is always packed (toiletries and grooming supplies, camera, laptop, underwear, socks, shorts, t-shirts etc.).

The next stage depends on where I’m going (and how long I’ll be gone), but generally involves packing needed outer garments. This is usually a last minute rush job.

This is very much like my life. Part prepared in advance, part last minute rush.

If I am going mountain climbing, or camping, or on a trip with many children, or searching for Sasquatches, or travelling for a lengthy time
in civilization and nodding off in a hotel…the requirements vary, as does the prep time.

That being said…I can also throw together the necessities in each example on the spur of the moment…which is most often the case…

Because even though I do not avoid planning ahead…circumstance does sometimes abruptly shift, bringing unforeseen opportunity into sharp focus and one must therefore, adjust…instantaneously.

    Hi Allison,
I always pack a day before but i would pack later if other people didn’t make me pack earlier. to tell the truth i would forget alot of stuff, that isn’t really important but i like to have, without my checklist. i think that i pack what i need to and thats what i remember but i sometimes forget extra things. for example, last year, i went somewhere and i brought my playstation 2, but i forgot to bring games for it so it was pointless to have it there. you are right it is about the adventure. i had to do other things to entertain myself. it was still fun but it taught me to always check that i have everything i need for whatever i bring.

hope you have fun with life.

First of all I want to express how grateful I feel for your autograph. I received it a week ago when I was coming back home from the gym. Really I thought that it wasn’t going to arrive. I express myself so, because for me it is a diamond which traveled kilometers to reach my hands. When I see it I imagine all the places, days and nights that it should have crossed. Thank you -and Tabby for packing the photo- one more time, I think there are no words how could I express myself, I should have to invent new ones and give them the ability to cross the limits of the screen which you’re using to read this. I promise that I will keep it forever, I don’t care if someone offers me thousands or million of dollars, I don’t mind! There’s no price which could be assigned to your autograph. For me, it is inestimable, because it’s a part of you.

About packing, and all the stuff that it brings up, I’m going to be honest, I always plan to pack my stuff, but everytime I’m going to do it, something distracts me and I get lazy. I start packing all on the last moments -in my case it uses to happen in between of the two last hours before I’ve to trip. If we talk about packing in general terms, -packing small stuff to meet friends or to go to some event or place-, I have to tell you that I keep the same habit. Otherwise, if I’ve to go to somewhere where I’ll have to assume an important role, where my partners depend of me, I get very careless with the things I’m going to pack. So, for those moments, I’ve recently started the habit of doing a checklist. Let me tell you that, at first, I hated the idea of listing the things I should do -I felt it like a totally parameterized method-. Nevertheless, I’ve to admit that it has given me good results and I’ve started to change my mind about it. Now I see it like a powerful tool to be used just in the most important situations.

I’ve already read the three ways how your habits could be looked. Maybe I’m wrong, but I support you in the second way, because I think that it’s awful to think too far and specially when we’re talking about a trip where you’re going to relax. I think that you’re adorable when you refer to yourself as a child.

The third way is something that I’ve always done and thought, I don’t know, maybe I like the soft risk or the consequences that it could bring. Besides I always receive advices of my mother, I often learn from my own experience. Let me tell you that “the lack of preparation” sometimes gives an unforgettable experience. A prove of that is what happened to me on the last Sunday, when I went to the best gig of my whole life. It was the greatest performance of the year, one of my favourite bands “Soda Stereo” was going to have a performance that day and I had already bought my ticket to be on the first row, face to face with them. There were thousand of people over there and everybody was totally excited. I forgot to mention that the tickets had been sold one month ago and because of the magnitude of people, the organizers had put several rules.

The fact is that I had forgotten that one rule was the prohibition of any kind of video cameras to the show. People with cameras would not enter to the show. When I was in the queue and I realized of that, I hid the camera between my pants and my shoe -something difficult to imagine, but I did it. Later, the show started and everything went more than perfect, I could record the best of it, I sang, I leaped, I danced and I cried every lyric. Now, besides my sore throat, I feel plenty happy and I will never forget the great moments that I lived. :D

    Bye Alli

    Hi Allison,

Well I have to admit, on the subject of packing I am definately a night before man…so i’m ready to go as soon as i’m up. However I guess i also plan a bit as in I tend to wear the clothes I’m not going to take with me a couple of days before hand…dull right?!

Your explainations in just throwing things in a bag..and living in the moment, I guess that’s part of your character which makes you such a talanted actress, after all I guess you have to be “in the moment” to generate a particular emotion within a scene?

You bring up a good point though, why waste time and energy worrying about mundane items and just live life.

    Have a fun week,

    Hi Allison!

I usually pack the night before and typically take my cosmetics/medicines, and depending on the weather, nice shorts or jeans and tops. Fancy wear, if needed, can be purchased whereever it is I’m staying. I love getting to the airport and do some people watching (trying to imagine where it is everybodys going and why).

One of the more interesting trips I’ve taken was to Las Vegas (definately reccomend it). While I was waiting at the gate to my plane for the flight home from Vegas, I noticed that the people at the gate next to mine didn’t have a plane (Don’t worry…the nice people at Delta noticed it too!), and they were being booked onto other planes. Quite a few made their way onto my flight to Cincinnati (home…sweet home), and when we pulled up to the gate, listening to the poor pilot annouce the new gates was like listening to someone play bingo (“If you’re going to Chicago, use gate B10.” etc.), funny stuff!

Have a great trip, no matter what or when you pack or don’t pack!

    Hi Allison,

I didnt know how else to send you a note that would surely you personally would read but here. So I first apologize this is under the survey comments. I saw you at the Vancouver airport last Sunday waiting to board on the Seattle flight – am a huge fan and wanted to say hi and ask you about the book you were reading but was too shy and intimidated and thought you might get bugged all the time. You were reading a book called ‘…Spirituality and…’ and you were wearing cowboy boots…right? it was so cold there! I was sitting diagnoally from you Asian gal in the wool green coat on the phone. I wrote to you on myspace only to learn after the fact that the site is only managed by your online team and that you might not even get that note. ):

I grew up in BC and went there to meet someone and try to reconnect with friends. Anyway, I would love to hear from you and hope I do-please send me an email? A big fan now living in California…

    Heyy Alison :)

I’m kinda laid back but organised in packing things..
I pack 2 says before I go anywhere major ( 2wk vacation etc)

The first nite is wen i throw all the heavy stuff in and then the next nite, my wash kit (Shaver, toothbrush etc) and all the trivial stuff (magazines to read.) makes my life easier and I’m not rushing like my parents who do everything last minute these days.. so I can sit back and chill.. and not worry.

Maybe that says somethin about me.. who knows.?.

    Allison –

Depending on where I’m going, who I’m going with, and how long, it can be anywhere to weeks in advance to the morning I leave as the cab is pulling up to pick me up, lol. The latter is reminiscent of my most recent trip to NYC last May. Of course, I forgot deodorant, toothpaste, etc etc. So we went to the store and got some, no biggie. I’m way more lax in my packing than I was 10 years ago.

Well put! Your very right in your way of thinking. It makes you wonder how some people live out of their suitcases. The verse escapes me,
but I like “worry not about tommorrow for today has its own anxieties.” Its just one less anxiety when you dont have to worry about packing. Thanks for the blogs, and I enjoyed taking your survey on a rare half a day off. But one question I had but didnt have time to write as I finished it. Unless your targeting a certain age group, as indicated, what do you consider over the hill? As I am 32, yet can work 17 hours a day and still run rings around you 20 something years old, just wondering. Any other bloggers who read this and havent done so, make sure to take Allison’s survey! Keep up the good work, and unfortunately I have missed most of Smallville this year, definately not intentionally, but because of school and work. Good luck with your future business ventures, and God bless. Oh and Happy Holidays! From the Great Lake State.

I pack two nights before I travel, and then re-pack the night before. I always find that I’ve forgotten something, and that I’ve packed things that, on second thought, I don’t really need.

Three things I always pack, whereever and whenever I travle: a sweater (it gets cold everywhere), a role of duct tape (it really does fix anything!), and a good book.

    Hi Allison,
what a funny question……in about 12 hours I am off to the airport, a 10,000 km flight home, for christmas. Same procedure every year: I don’t sleep the night before (work, work, work….), and I pack exactly 15 minutes before I walk out the door. Hehe….
Happy Holidays to you, your family and friends,
    Until next time.

    Hi Allison

I pack the night before I travel. During the few days preceding the trip, I check my needs. I do not travel very often but in my country , I have to pack two times each year.
In october I pack my summer clothes and in april I pact my winter clothes. I make this procedure with 2 plastic boxes and one hour is sufficient. This procedure is necessary because of the changing seasons are like a trip.
It is as if we changed of country. In few months, we go from 30c to minus 30c. I live in a country where I can see major
changes of scenery and lifestyle without having to move , but I must annually pack my clothes.
Last Sunday, in Montreal we received 45 cm of snow. It was the second snowstorm in 2 weeks. I spent several hours
    to clear all this snow.
Do you buy your gifts at the last minute?
You are wonderfull in the last episode Gemini. Your scenes with Jimmy are amazing.
Your time on the screen after 9 episodes is 80 minutes compared to 77 minutes last season. Wow It’s fantastic.
Take care of you and Merry Christmast.
    Bye
    Claude

It’s Ironic that I stumbled on this topic just now, because this subject has actually been on my mind this week.

My temperment leans toward sanguine, but I have a strong melancholoy streak, and have always wondered why. Since Sanguines aren’t organized types, but melancholies are, one would think that the two personality traits would be mutually exclusive. Yet here they are.

Yet when I think about it, Packing has a lot to do with it.

You see, when I was 5, my parents divorced, yet I continued to live with both of them. The arrangement was that I spent one week with one, and then the next with the other. So packing for me tends to be thought of in terms of “do I have enough clean underwear to last the week?”

I suppose I’m thinking about this because one of my close friends has teenagers of her own, and at an age where I had packing down to “7 days of socks, 7 days of underwear, toothbrush and access to a laundraumat after the first week,” she’s still chasing her daughter down to make sure that she packed her cheerleading bloomers for after school practice.

I suppose maturity comes with experience, and experience with adventure. But if you wear the same outfit for 5 days in a row, people start to notice.
