WELCOME TO THE DIRECTING COUNTDOWN!

So I start directing my episode of Smallville in exactly 87 days and I must say that I am in a bit of a panic.

Not as bad as I was last year, I feel a little more confident in myself and my ability. But still, there is a general sense of “HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK AM I DOING” going on here. So I have decided to make yet another public commitment!
I am going to utilize the fantastic support of this community to hold me accountable to doing my directing homework. Everyday I am going to do one thing that helps me understand something new about directing and I will post what that thing is on this site. So if you wanna follow along on my virtual hike to become a more skilled leader, you can check in with me while I check in with you and see what in the world I am doing to become better at this job I have taken on!
If you wanna learn alongside me, please feel free and comment as much as you like on the Directing Countdown Forum Section. All you will need are some scripts to work with and a few books, and then from time to time an actual project to film and share!
Check out Script-o-rama to get your hands on whatever scripts you wanna work on!

    Hey Ali,

I am a student working in the film section…It’s a really cool thing but I tink basically, directing is about being a people person and how or what can you do to make em do what u want em to do for you. It’s about how far u can and want to push the team to make a perfect film…

Thanks for sharing your directing debut with us. You are a great actress one of my favorites. Chloe is one of the resonds that I watch Smallville. I am sure your directing talents will be just as good. Relax and enjoy the ride. Also Chloe and Clarks relationship on Smallville has always bin the best on the show I hope their love will grow after Clark reads her letter. All the best, Peter

I’m the one directing most of the times when we film things for school or whatsoever! So Congratulations! I’m so lost with Smallville. I haven’t watched any episodes from sesaon 7 but I restarted from season 1 throughout to 4. I just started season 4. I bought all of them. But as soon as season 7 comes out on dvd I’m buying it! Ok well have a great day! And don’t worry you’ll do an excellent job on directing this episode because you are amazingly talented, and intelligent, and creative and I could go on forever! 100% support from Brittany

Congrats Allison on your directing debut. I am happy and sad at the same time. Happy that you are expanding your knowledge of the film making process, but very sad that this is the last season of Smallville. The world will be a dimmer place on the day it ends. I just wish I could finish my screenplay so that I could get the same feelings you are having with your directing. I am at such a block it is discusting. I would love to be at the point that I could say I was directing, but it is not my time yet.

PS. I really am Kal-El’s dad. I know I am an UBERGEEK….LOL. I have an 8 y.o. son and he is proud to have the name of Kal-El.

My Advice.. Just a few simple things to start with.
1.) Read the script…re-read the script…read it again…picture the scene as you think it is intended in the script.
2.) There will be a million different things pulling you in each direction. Don’t get distracted. Stay focused of the task at hand.
3.)Plan out a shotlist of each scene..who is in it..what location does it take place at..and so forth..
4.) put your personal feelings aside for who you work with..including the actors and crew.
5.) Most importantly allow creative freedom on the set. If someone has an idea try it.. Makes all the difference in the editing room.
6.)And finally..Make the shots count.. take each scene in multiple directions..multiple ways…that way you have plenty of material in the editing room to work with so you can start to build some continuity to your scenes as you are putting them together..the worst feeling and problem with directing is when you are in the editing room and you realize you are going to have to re-shoot a scene.

My thoughts in a nutshell….I know you will do great :)

    Hi Allison,
Thanks for sharing your directing debut with us.
    When you receive the scrip?
As you clues about the episode?

The actors receive shortly before the shooting. Do you keep to yourself the scrip without being able to share it with other actors?
Directing an episode is multiply the pleasure of creation. Plus there will be characters, there will be more creations.
Do you want an episode with a lot of players to lead, or vice versa?

    Bye
    Claude.

Just hang in there and everything will work itself out. But, if ya need to vent, or just chat with someone, and have the time, you’re more than welcome to shoot me a line or two.

Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see all the new eps of season 8.

Well, this is cool. As an amateur film maker, I always try to remember two things:
Celebrate all of the artists around you.
    Have fun with the camera!
The rest of it -I think- you already know.

P.S. I watched the 7th Heaven with you on it. I could see Chloe there in some scenes, and not others.
