Evening of Learning

I spent the evening with one of our finest Smallvillian directors, buying drinks and picking his brain! However, the consequence of this is pre-mature exhaustion and a brain that is solely equipped at choosing wine and telling random travel stories.

So in lieu of a riveting discussion and philosophical post I will simply say this:

Life is beautiful and for those that refuse to recognize this, I am sad. But, I will continue to make art, tell jokes, drink wine, and share stories. Because we are a divine species with infinite potential and never ending surprise.

Cheers
xo
Allison

some people say life is a test….
    some people disagree.
Well if its a test, its the best damn test ive ever gotten the chance to take!
No matter what life is, it should always be cherished and celebrated.

I look to the day when everyone agrees life is beautiful, and hopefully appreciates it as much as you do.

Are you intimidated when you are around other directors since you know that your own directing time is coming up? Just curious wonderings…

I love the discussions you’re carrying on here, they’re very mind opening. I just don’t really participate in them because some of your topics surprisingly make me draw blanks. Or they make me think so much into it I just don’t know exactly what to reply or how to phrase my own opinions. I’m telling you= Mind Boggling!

I am still in yesterday’s blog, want to say hello to our little friend (line borrowed from scar face) melissa.

You see melissa, peru or spain you’ll always be a part of our community. I have travelled myself and lived in a few different countries. Canada is home, but I am planing to move soon again just for a few years. When I was doing my 2 years of service in the special forces in Army (mostly security, peace keeping and law inforcement) anytime they needed a volunteer I was the first to go. You never knew what was waiting for you, and that was what I liked about it. I have seen places and people which I would never choose to go and see on my own time, yet it has been the most amazing part of my life. Change can be scary sometimes but we are like waves in a sea, we are alive as long as we move. I am sure we all want to see that positive energy is bringing your drawings back to life. Do it for us Okay ?

Life is a beautiful thang, ment to be explored, enjoyed, cultivated, and shared with others in the only way that you/we individuals know how…so live it up and live it to the fullness that it was ment to be lived. To not do so, is to rob yourself and others of a truly divine experience.

You’re all right. Life is beautiful, sometimes scary, sad or even devastating, but still beautiful!

On the subject of the Human Race being a divine species with infinite potential and never ending surprise, I’m not sure if any of you have managed to check out the news over the last few days, but there was one particular story that jumped out at me!

On Thursday, in the Bronx section of New York, an off duty, pregnant police officer was tragically hit by a bus, and pinned underneath. What caught my attention was the fact that within seconds of this happening, 30 or more complete strangers came together, managed to co-ordinate their efforts, and lift the entire bus long enough for the emergency services to get the woman out.

These people didn’t know her, they didn’t even know each other, yet they knew that only if they worked as a team would this woman have any chance of surviving.

Sadly she later died, but thanks to the efforts of these anonymous heroes, and her shear determination, she managed to give birth to her Son, before she this happened. I’m not ashamed to say that this story brought a tear to my eye.

I know this event doesn’t exactly have a happy ending, but I think it shows just what miracles the Human race could achieve, if only we put aside our petty differences and worked together!

    Friday

P.S. Allison, I’m sure you will be an amazing Director. You already have one advantage; you are a great actor who knows what you expect from yourself.

I’m sure that you’re co-workers respect you as much as we do and as a result will work as hard as they can for you!

One of my favourite ever quotes:

“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the grains of sand in Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinaryness, that are here.”

I like taylor nikole’s question…because I can’t leave simple truths well enough alone. lol.

I don’t think suffering is beautiful, but I think our ability to rise above suffering is. In fact, I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about us – that some of us can endure some truly unspeakable things, and still emerge from that stronger and wiser, and even able to forgive. So for those who can’t see the beauty of life because of their circumstances, I feel sad that they’re suffering, but I have hope that they’ll come out on other side, better for having gone through that.

    That’s exactly right…
not only should your own life be cherished but every other life which surrounds you (no matter how bad their circumstances may be).

“Life is beautiful and for those that refuse to recognize this, I am sad.”

this was what really got me thinking though… this one sentence.
Which brought me to my question…
What if someone never got the chance to have the realization? Is this ‘sad feeling just for people who have potential from the beginning to realize the beauty in life?
Some people say… that in the midst of facing death… after a long life (maybe)… people realize the beauty in life… how much they felt when they knew they most likely had long lives ahead of them…

sorry, this just brings me into so much more…

“Life is beautiful and for those that refuse to recognize this, I am sad.”

Fair enough. From your postings, and also from some of the creative choices you have made in playing Chloe, you seem to be quite an optimist. I have a question though: Do you think it’s possible that looking at life through an optimistic filter is potentially just as limiting as looking at life skeptically? Does the sunniness of Mozart not need to be counterbalanced with the weight of Beethoven? In literature, few classic novels are relentlessly upbeat. Perhaps that’s because… neither is life.

Milan Kundera’s “Unbearable Lightness of Being” delves into this issue of lightness versus weight– which is negative, which positive. It also gets into the issue of kitsch: art (and by extension life) that chooses to ignore that which is unpalatable, distasteful. The reason Sabina is drawn to Tomas, she tells him, is that he is the complete opposite of kitsch. And surprisingly, the thing she finds unbearable about life under communism is the aesthetic of communist kitsch: upbeat slogans and triumphal parades, the relentless denial of everything that is unacceptable in life. It’s surprising that her primary objection to life under a dictatorship is an aesthetic one, but I found it a very powerful statement of the character’s commitment to truth, to looking at life honestly and without blinking.

“Life is beautiful and for those that refuse to recognize this, I am sad.”

Life isn’t always beautiful. Life is life. I think a meaningful life consists of so much more than that. “Life isn’t always beautiful, and for those that refuse to realize this, I am sad.” If you are to define life, that’s more real…at to me it is.

I think life is connected with so much pressure from society and all the people around you. They want you to follow the rules, to go the right way and to fulfill the expectations of others.
Life isn’t alway beautiful if you are not in a position to make your own decisions.
How would it be to swim against the stream? To break out?Do your own thing?
I am asking myself sometimes all these questions. Don’t get me wrong I like the way my life is right now. But you always thing what would it be like if you could change your entire life and do something completly diffrent, right!? I don’t know…sometimes I really wonder! If life would be more beautiful than. Is it just me or do you guys have the same thoughts sometimes, too???
    I should stop now. :-)
But I have to say I am glad that I had the opportunity right now to say my thoughts out loud!!!Great feeling…

I think it means the same thing. You live just once, if you don’t find a way to enjoy it in whatever circumstances you are, well ….
Those people who don’t think so, may be they should go back to “Free Will” section and see what they wrote about how we are responsible to everything happening to us.

    Hi Allison.
Feeling sad is the opposite of feeling happy.
The more you are sensitive and passionate, the easier it is to move from one extreme to another.
It is difficult to rationalise these two sentiments. Sadness is it due to a specific event or it is in our nature.
It is a great advantage for a player to play with the emotions and thus make its true character.
This feature can not be left to the locker room after the shooting.
Sadness is the greatest source of inspiration for artists. No sadness, no inspiration.
You can not do away with this sentiment. It is in you. Even if you got everything that you want, the feeling persist. Small changes such as making the sport brings endorphins in our system and we feel better. Small changes are important not to lose your bearings.
You’re not alone in having this feeling. If Chloe from the episode ” Truth” asked how you feel, we could not as answer just “fine”.
When I am sad, I try to think less and I swim.
    About Olympics.
Michael Phelt had problems with hyperactivity. He didn’t like to take medication, he told his mother, I shall swim. It’s really inspiring.
Allison, have a good and long weekend.

    Bye
    Claude.

    FROM CHILDHOOD’S HOUR

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
    My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then—in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life—was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent or the fountain,
From the red cliff or the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed my flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

    By Edgar Allan Poe……..

But touching on some earlier good points by some of your replies, think about the terminally ill. Whether life is beautiful or not, most people are glad to just be alive!

You guuuuuuuys…when I read Allison’s post this morning… “Life is beautiful”…I thought, “Great! Simple! Not too deep! We can take a break today!” But nooooo…y’all had to go and ask all these thought-provoking questions! lol. ;)

taylor nikole…I think I understand your question (“Is this sad feeling just for people who have potential from the beginning to realize the beauty in life?).

Personally, I think everyone has the potential to recognize the beauty in life…maybe not to the same degree as everyone else, and maybe not as often as everyone else, but the possibility is there.

When Allison said, “Life is beautiful and for those that refuse to recognize this, I am sad.” I interpreted that to mean that she was making a distinction between those who can’t see the beauty in life (at least for the time being because of their circumstances), and those who willfully refuse to recognize the beauty in life, despite being fortunate enough to have relatively good circumstances. Take me for example. If you look at my life…sure, it’s not perfect. There have been ups and downs. There is stress. But I am grateful everyday because I see, daily, people who have it worse than I do. And many of these people, they still manage to get on somehow, without bringing down everyone around them. So, knowing that I have it better than others, if I were to persist in seeing the bad side of everyone, to constantly complain, to always degrade others, to never show gratitude…then I would agree with Allison…I would feel sad for someone like that.

paul…I think you bring up some really great points. :) If I were that character in the book, I think what I would be offended by is not so much the positivity of the messages, but the falseness of those messages. It’s like that saying, “Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining.” I am an optimist. If someone were to actually pee on my leg, my initial reaction would probably be, “Gross!” And certainly I would be puzzled as to why someone was peeing on my leg. But as an optimist, maybe I’d look at that situation and go, “Well, I needed to take a shower anyway.” Or, “At least it’s just pee and not poop.” But taking that perspective doesn’t mean I’m deluding myself into believing that it’s rain. In fact, if that person were to tell me it was rain, I would probably get angry because I don’t like it when people so blatantly insult my intelligence. So, I don’t think an optimistic perspective is limiting. I think ignorance is limiting. But I think skepticism is healthy. That’s what I am…a skeptical optimist, or an optimistic skeptic, whichever. I try to maintain a positive outlook, but I also like to question everything.

Yeah… I agree with the whole concept… “life is beautiful” and cut it there.
    mainly what bothered me was

“and for those that refuse to recognize this, I am sad”

    in short:
It seems to me, like saying this… we are a little too worried about how people are living their lives.
We can’t feel sad for every person or worry about every person not thinking of life as many of us may think of it.

Damn straight life is beautiful! It’s our DUTY in life to find the beauty in it instead of waiting for the beauty to suddenly *poof* appear. The little details in life and the simplicity of it (once we actually strive to and succeed to make it simple) holds the most beauty, I believe.

You are such a great gal, Allison. With each and every entry, I feel more and more inspired to grab life with my bare hands and make the best of it while I’m here.

    -Excuse my english-
I come here almost everyday to read your opinions but sometimes the threads are very “deep” and my poor english is a limit for express my ideas. But today..

“Life is beautiful and for those that –refuse– to recognize this, I am sad.”
I think, instead of refuse, the words I should use are “for those that never see this, I’m sad”

Like Kamil Karaszewski (#49) said, some people haven’t the chance of know it, I’m sure everybody here is thinking on start new proyect, maybe write a book (me!), get marry, learn piano; but some poor people who is lucky if they get something to eat today, they (maybe) don’t think the same.

A hour ago finished a UNICEF’s TV program called “Un sol para los chicos” (“A sun for the children”). It’s made yearly, and the target is get donations from people and corporations for help children on Argentina.
In a moment of the night there was a report of a woman who record on video some children of poor zones of my country, the question were “What is your dream?”. You can see on all children that eyes of happiness and hope. Doesn’t matter if they had nothing, they wanted to be a doctor, a soccer player, an actress… but, when they grow up and start to know the life they have, where the dreams and projects are very hard to reach, even if they fight; they will start to lose that hope, and they are going to think about the “beautiful life” is for fairy tales.

Maybe the life is like a ball inside a box. When you open it, you can get a leather ball, a plastic one… of course you can try to customize it and make it better. The problem is when you open the box and see the ball broken, Can you fix it?

its not that we want to refuse or not see it,
we may be oblivious and never get the chance
and whos fault was that? if we never had the awareness of the beauty?

Wow, I’m gone a few days and bam, lots of posts to respond to…well this is my take on the “life is beautiful”…..because of my belief system, I truly think that what God created and what He intended for us is truly beautiful. Sin, on the other hand is not beautiful. And my understanding of sin is this: anything that violates the love principle because God is love. So many people hate the sin concept because they think that people who talk about it are pointing the finger. I simple see it as not walking in love. Love is patient, kind, etc…..
anyway….and I’m not all for being “nice” so many people think that niceness is equated with being a loving person…sometimes love can be tough!
