Change…
Posted by Allison Mack | Filed under Blog
Do you ever wonder what motivates change? I know that most of the time I change because I am bloody uncomfortable and I want to get comfortable. But every once in a while, and granted it is a rare occasion, I will see something I think is so amazing, that I wanna do it too. I am collecting people who influence me in this way and I have to decided to start my very own run and gun talk show. I have started interviewing the people who’s stories amaze and excite me. People who are doing things I think are beautiful, doing that which I never thought was possible, but because of them, I now strive to achieve.
I will post my first interview tomorrow! I think you all will dig it! It is the next phase of my dinner party, inviting people over that inspire me and mingling! Sharing, enjoying, and creating! Oh my!
Some of the peeps I will be introducing you all too have sites and blogs of their own and they will be interviewing me as well. So, when you check out their stuff, you can see what they wanted to know about me. Sort of a cross pollination deal!
So come back tomorrow and see what I got.
Oh… And a question to ponder. What inspires change in you? What moves you to push harder and grow faster?

September 4th, 2008 at 3:23 pmHi. What you do is awesome, I like tha idea of you interviewing people around so…..I believe that what inspires me are the awesome and wonderful people I have around:my parents,my sister,my friends…..They are really supporting people and they all do things I wanna do in the future, not exactly what they do, I took them as a big model to follow, their love for what they do inspires me a lot, makes me wanna jump into the road and follow and also create a beautiful future. Those people are my inspiration, that’s why I always am looking and pushing harder for a great future. I love the idea of have their support and love.

September 4th, 2008 at 3:40 pmI think if someone changes from bad person to good one I consider that something indredible to do, know that it’s really hard for someone who is “bad” is trying to change having no one by your side, just thinking about how miserable you feel doing those horrible things…..I thinks that’s just amazing…..Changes are great if we talk about good changes….but when good turns to bad…..all we have to do is to have support from something or someone….or if we have a friend or family that is getting for a bad situation we have to be there for that person, helping this person not to turning out bad, helping let him/her know that you are by his/her sida.
Changes are great challenges, and we are here to make feel them….good or bad….you always will need someone by your side….and that someone will always need you for help and support.
Bye,Melissa. -

September 4th, 2008 at 3:43 pmWhat inspires me to change is when I think I can do something better, more effectively. Usually involves teaching. Sometimes personal life. It is rarely a “I COULD do this better” type of thing…is important enough to be something that MUST be improved or else my health, or a child’s education, or my own children will somehow suffer if I DON’T change. Otherwise I enjoy my ruts!

September 4th, 2008 at 3:49 pmThe interviewing and sharing sounds awesome! I can’t wait! I think will be a very good thing.
Change… change can seem so scary to me sometimes. But once I take a risk and do something I normally would not, I find I usually enjoy it, wonder why I didn’t try it before, and tell myself that taking chances can be beneficial. After I break through my shell, I find that I really do want to get out there, live, and enjoy everything I possibly can.
When I’m so afraid to change, I try to think of what’s holding me back. And I weigh what’s holding me back with what could push me forward if I let it. I have a lot admiration for those who can embrace and accept change easier than I.
What inspires me to change? Plenty of things: the people I love and look up to, thinking of what I could be once I did change, the possibility of a better me, knowing I can help shove my future in the direction I want it to go, and believing I can actually change.
It’s really just letting go of being scared of what other people with think or say, of not being able to change at all, of not being able to change to what you want, and of risking what you already have.
But if you’re to scared to change, everything will stay as it is. No variety or spice in your life. That, or someone could change it for you, and not in the way you’d like.
… Thank you for the question. I might have just inspired myself and given myself the push I need to change something I know I’ve been needing to.
Sometimes all we need is a little shove!

September 4th, 2008 at 3:57 pmWhat inspires change in me is… The need to be different from everybody else and try and change the world, because “You can’t change the world” Is a lie. I’ve witnessed it. I’ve inspired classmates before in my highschool, to strive to be better, to Go to school and be the bets they can be, and instead to go school, chin up, and impress! Not for others to impress you. And I think that the reactions I get from my classmates after them sharing their …success from taking my advice, just inspires me to keep going and spread the word a little bit more. “If I have helped somebody in life, then my life is not in vein.”
That’s it for now… Ciao Aly.Lizeth

September 4th, 2008 at 3:58 pmI have always been a person who believes in personal progression.
Meaning that I should not only be better this year than I was last year…but better this week as oppossed to last week…and be better today than I was yesterday.
And of course to not have recreational anxiety about it. It is all mostly baby steps and new discoveries and experiences…exploring and trying to develop talents…learn new skills and improve on whatever I have…
And there is ALWAYS opportunity to learn to love more.

September 4th, 2008 at 4:07 pmanything can inspire change. looking at the right random object. noticing a theme in a movie or tv show. conversations. books. illness, death, and even birth.
but whether or not we decide to ACTUALLY change is up to each person. I can want to change. I can TRY to change. but that doesn’t mean I will. there has to be EFFORT and AMBITION.
Personally, what inspires change in myself is realizing my own potential and wanting to achieve it. but attaining one’s own potential is like constantly dividing. you can get closer and closer and closer to the ultimate goal, but it’s nothing more than an ideal situation. ideal is never met. ideal is utopia (if you will). I want to be the best I can. this is why we all learn. when we stop learning, we stop growing. stopping growth is to stop yourself from going up in the world. then you’re just stuck.
I want to change to prevent getting myself stuck in life. not just my skills, but also ethically/morally, spiritually, and socially.
what do I want to change in myself, specifically? everything. not a total change, but more like improvements. more ambition, being less lazy, noticing more in life that I’m missing out on. things like that. oh yeah. and getting into shape.

September 4th, 2008 at 4:24 pmI admit that sometimes I don’t like change. Sometimes it scares me. I’m so comfortable in where I am that I wouldn’t want anything to change. BUT that’s some days! OTHER days I’m totally motivated to change and be different. Like some days I want to be different and stand out and others I just want mesh into the crowd until I’m invicible you know? But I DO like change. I see it as something that no one can control, because there will come a time where life will take a turn you don’t expect and suddenly your life will turn upside down. Change is something that we can let happen or it catches up with us and pushes us to change.

September 4th, 2008 at 4:39 pmI guess I get inspired to change, to do better and strive to be a better person through stories that involve people both historical, current and even fictional that connect with me on an emotional level!
Be it funny, sad, epic, tragic, serious or just plain sillly what it is I must “move” me, ie make me laugh, cry, anger and comfort me.
It can be events in the people I interact with during my day or by watching the news, watching the olympics, reading a book (and blogs), listening to a song or even a fantasy tv show.
They all impact on what I wish to change in my own life, and hope they encourage me to make the most of my life.
They help me feel I have EARNED the right to have been so LUCKY in the life I lead and the good friends and family I have around me and the freedoms and material things I take for granted far too often.

The Friday Philosopher Says:
September 4th, 2008 at 5:32 pmI would like to say that I inspire change within myself, but if I did, I would probably be lying!
Like Amanda, I usually give change a wide berth, I don’t really know why. I’m not afraid of most changes; I know that certain changes are in fact a necessity for progression.
“A change is as good as a rest.” As my dear old Grandmother used to say; for me personally to change, there has to be a formidable force claiming responsibility for it, little changes, like those of self progression happen on a daily basis, but they are so small and seemingly insignificant that I hardly notice them. However, the memorable changes usually leave a trail in their wake, hopefully it’s not a trail of destruction, but that really isn’t up to us, as most of the time, we have very little control over the forces behind change. Like Michelle has said, sometimes the risks presented by any given changes are out-weighed by the curiosity of what life would be like after their occurrence, I do believe that colossal changes are scary no matter who you are, but sometimes, you just need to step to the edge and take that leap of faith!
As for inspiration; there are many things that inspire me, but not all of them, warrant change. Then again there are those moments when a change happens whether you wanted to or not! I have learned that it is better to try to accept those changes than to fight them, in my experience they are usually so drastic that there is not much that can be done to un-change them. Also, along with certain aspects of life there are some people who have and continue to inspire change in me; the main difference between these people and other forms of change is that, these few people don’t always need to work to inspire me; sometimes all it takes is the request for change.
I’m looking forward to the interviews, especially those where you are the interviewee. I know that we will probably never meet in person, but maybe this will help those of us who live so far away to get to know the real Allison Mack, if only a little bit better.

P.S. Rachel, I can’t speak for everyone, but I was born confused! Insignificant spelling errors are not going to make that any worse!

September 4th, 2008 at 6:09 pmOne thing about changes…..
Big changes scares me a lot, so I stay with the small ones and do them little by little. Is more effective.
When I think in big changes, it usually involves a pack of changes and it kinda discourages me since the result won’t come as fast as I want.
So I take one day after the other, one small change after other. Like cutting my hair, changing my appearence, working my self-esteem, working my shyness, traveling by myself, making new friends, reading good books and getting one thing leading me to another…
Its better than just propose myself to be be sucessfull. -

“Around here, however, we don’t look backward for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because were curious…And curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
-Walt DisneyChange for me is an exciting thing to experience. I love doing and trying new things. Especially when it brings me closer to my goals in life. I also love how change is just a part of life. There’s nothing we can do to avoid it . It all depends on how brave we are when it looks us in the eye. We can either embrace it or look away.

September 4th, 2008 at 7:11 pmWhen I was a kid, the product labels on a box of cereal or any product rarely changed. It made the product recognizable. Plus they didn’t have a cheap way of making hundreds of labeling variations like they do today. One of my first memories of being very upset about anything was when I thought my Mother had changed from a product that I ate every day. My Mother patiently showed me that it was the same stuff with a newly designed label. My reaction was “Why the heck would they do that?” Unlike the people I met that had lifelong friends, my family moved every couple years. That was more than enough change for me. But the rate of change of the things around me keeps accelerating. Software changes so drastically every year or two that having experience with using a program can actually be a detriment. So any more, something steady and unchanging is a great comfort to me. Maneuvering in the modern world is like walking through quicksand in high winds during an earthquake.

Emily Says:
September 4th, 2008 at 7:25 pmWhat inspires change in me… hmm. Probably people’s reactions. I am a rather shy person (well, really more of an introvert…), and if someone actually takes incentive and talks to me, I generally listen to what they have to say, and attempt to model my thoughts and actions accordingly. Not to say I am easily persuaded… I just try to keep an open mind, and stay on everyone’s good side. Which sometimes means being someone I’m really not… but, the catch is, I’m too shy to show people other than my closest friends and family the real me. This is a major struggle I’m working with, to overcome my timidness. It’s hard changing. I’m a rather traditional person – I don’t like change all that much. I didn’t even like switching our Christmas tree star for an angel. Am I being contradictory? I say I try to keep an open mind, but then say I don’t like change. I guess the overall summary of this confusing post is… I want to change, but it’s hard for me to do so. So, the final answer to your question is: Wanting to change and getting encouragement to do so is what inspires change in me. How’s that? =P
To quote Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” I’m going about it in my own small ways. And, to quote Smashmouth, “Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas, ‘I need to get myself away from this place.’ I said yup; what a concept! I could use a little fuel myself and we could all use a little change…”Love from Arkansas!

September 4th, 2008 at 8:42 pmBoth “Change” and “Habbits” are very natural.
Creation and annihilation both mean change. It could be from matter to energy or vice versa but it is change. The concept of Time or Space is understood only because something changes. At one point you may feel okay with your age but it is not up to you it WILL change. But within those changes there are natural habbits; day and night, seasons, reproduction cycles…
We want to read a blog everyday (habbit) but on a different subject (change).
We need both, but every one should find the best combination that works the best for them. -

Daisy Says:
September 4th, 2008 at 11:37 pmExcellent question Allison. I think the people I look up to inspire change in me. My mom is one example of someone who inspires me. Sometimes even every day people inspire me. Every day people doing amazing things helps me see that I don’t have to be rich and famous to do great things.
I sometimes fear change. Sometimes I feel like life at a certain time is just so perfect, that I just don’t want it to change. That’s how I felt when I was in my senior year in high school. Everything was great, but then I graduated and change came. There was nothing I can do about that. Some change is just unavoidable. Graduating was a great accomplishment for me, but I really didn’t want to think past it. I think the biggest change I will face by far will happen in a few weeks. I’m moving away and going to a university. This was actually a change that I chose. Does that make sense? I actually got accepted to a local university which would’ve allowed me to stay at home which I’ve always lived in with the people that I love or I could choose to go to the university that was two hours away which would mean saying goodbye to everything I’ve ever known. I know being two hours away from home isn’t a big deal for some but for someone who has never lived on their own, it’s a BIG deal. I decided to make this big change to challenge myself, to become more independent, and to grow as a person. I also want to experience new things and I think that changing my environment will help me do that. I was also getting a little bored being in the same place all my life and couldn’t imagine continuing living in the same place for two more years. I could’ve chosen to stay at home and commute to my local university, but instead I’ve chosen to take the more difficult and unknown road. I am scared about moving away to a new town where I don’t know anybody, but you only live once right? I don’t want fear to stop me from taken advantage of an opportunity many don’t get.
I can’t wait to hear your interview tomorrow. I think this is a great idea.

That’s the sense I see in life and the reason that inspires me to do everything I do.
I also inspire by the persons that I know. My family, my friends.

September 5th, 2008 at 2:49 amI have to say that I like the idea you have there. On the (possibly) darker side, it would be a way to draw people in who participate here regularly by granting the prospect of meeting with you for an interview. Separating the celebrity aspect from the goal, I don’t think I’ve seen an approach like that done yet.
The questions have always been a good way to create activity, too. It makes the reader feel like they’re a part of something instead of a bystander, at least to some small extent.

Aysha Says:
September 5th, 2008 at 4:15 amI’m so excited about the interview! I can’t wait to here what others have to say! You really are evolving this site into something much greater and that kicks ass.
It’s funny that you mention change because lately I have been pondering the fact that I am so resistant to change in my life. I am really trying to force myself to look at change as something that will help me become a stronger and better version of what I am right now, but taking that first step scares the crap out of me.
And, at other times, I change without even realizing that I have. If the change is slow and gradual, I am more inclined roll with the waves of change. If it is too sudden, then I clam up and become stubborn. So, in essence, if the change is on my own terms, then I am okay with it. But, if it comes at me without notice, I freak.
Being more open to change is one of my lifetime goals.
Now, for your question: I feel that seeing others deal with what I am dealing with (whether it be something good or bad) inspires me to push harder and be the best that I can be.
I am a perfectionist by nature, and most of the time, it works in my favor when I want to accomplish something, but there are times when I set myself up for disappointment when I don’t perform at the level that I expect myself to perform at.
I am my own worst critic! Oye vey!

September 5th, 2008 at 5:21 amMy family, my friends, my surroundings, all inspire change in me. I like variety. I was always one to like trying new things. It’s sort of a ‘high’ for me.
For example, going to a magnet middle schools when all my other classmates went to the local junior high. When my parents moved from Oklahoma to Massachusetts when I was in college. I loved that I got a chance to experience a completely different culture.
I have not shared that I have two daughters often. I lost one as a baby from a heart defect about ten years-ago.
I had my second daughter six years ago. (Actually watching Season 1 of Smallville got me through a very nervous pregnancy – and that’s how I got hooked on it and you, Allison).
My daughter has inspired me to push myself and try new things, like substitute teaching because I love kids. I would have NEVER thought I could have done that when I was younger.
My sister told me ‘Don’t sell yourself short, Gail, you’d be surprised what you can do’. I know now life is too short. We must keep moving!

September 5th, 2008 at 7:46 amWhat inspires change in me? What moves me to push harder and grow faster?
I have to admit i’m a little scare of changes. I need to know where i’m going to really want to go there.
When i decide to change something it’s because i’m not happy with what i have, i think that i can have something better or maybe i think i will be a better person if i change this or that of myself.I need changes, as well, but i need to know where my feet are so then i can jump and be sure of what i’m doing.
I admire people who take oportunities when they see them, i can’t. I need to think about it too many times and i think that this is the reason i’m always looking for people who push me. Maybe i’m not brave enough to do it for myself.

September 5th, 2008 at 8:11 amI think that when you have decided to embark on a journey towards a better self, you are bound to change. You learn through trial and error, you grow and develop.
Also when you want to truly savor life and make a difference in the world. Now, what inspires change in me? Why do I push myself harder?
I have been given one chance to be a good human being. Therefore, I want to become an emotionally and physically strong(er) person and take good care of myself to be better equipped to be a good person to everyone around me and to deal with whatever life throws at me.
There are some pretty inspiring women out there.
My mom, my cousin, my aunt, you, Mariska Hargitay, Oprah, Kristin Kreuk, Emily Deschanel, … wow me because they are all genuinely unique and wonderful women, reaching out and making a difference in people’s (and animal’s) lives.I continue to open my heart, take care of myself, fill my brain with knowledge, explore my spirituality, take on a positive attitude…and, I continue to grow.
I am constantly inspired to be good and to do good. Some days, I have what I call the ‘oh-I-wish’ feeling when I think of all the great things these amazingly motivating women do and I wish I could get participate.
But, I remember myself how significant a smile, understanding, compassion or comfort can be. Taking time to listen to someone, greet someone, take good care of an animal,…the little things are important and can make a difference as well. I think that is a nice thought on my personal journey of self-discovery and in becoming a better human being.
What do you think?Interviews! You are fabulous! I’m really looking forward to it.
You keep surprising and amazing me.

September 5th, 2008 at 9:34 amWhen I realize I’m on the brink of somewhere or something I want to avoid, it is then that I am motivated to change. Let me elaborate with a recent example. I am not very consistent in eating healthy and exercising, but when I get to this brink of weight gain, I’ll start walking or biking more often and eat healthier on a more regular basis. Then the vicious cycle begins again. Splurge, freak, then change. This is simply the truth about me…not the way I wish to be portrayed.
I loved hearing what Emily Jubenvill (world’s greenest person) had to say about this. When Emily was asked to give one tip that could help people make a difference, instead of spouting off things we could to be greener, she simply said “I think the biggest thing you can do is find inspiration. What’s your passion? Why do you really want to make changes in your life? Because if you have that [inspiration], then they’ll be lifestyle changes forever versus a one time thing…If you want these to be long lasting changes in your life, find something that really inspires you.”
Now that is an awesome way to be!

September 5th, 2008 at 10:01 amPersonally what inspires me to change is fear. Fear of not evolving as a human being. Fear of staying at one level in my life. Fear of not accomplishing anything or achieving what I want to achieve.
But the real major factor that inspires me to change/evolve/grow (in a positive way) is God.

September 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pmChanges? ?. That is too difficult to change Me to whom. Because if to whom that is not pleasant what I there is that let go to hell. I certainly can change myself and I try will change for the better, but basically I suit myself. And in general each person the person and I think it and its nature that each of us especial with the private world and character is valuable. Therefore you learn the person and open in it that that new, same it is fascinating!

September 5th, 2008 at 3:00 pmAbout change… it’s very simple… “change is life”.
I like changes, a change is as good as a rest, routine is not good.
What inspires me to change?… family…friends…good people… environment…. the Life.
It’s not complicated… but sometimes I need time to make changes, depend of how deep is the change…. of course. -

September 6th, 2008 at 12:30 amWithout change, how can the world or any one individual move forward? They cant. Its like standing next to a stagnant body of water, just remains the same, motionless, but a flowing river, ever changing and moving will always be going somewhere!

September 6th, 2008 at 4:35 am“People don’t change.”
–Dr. HouseI’m ambivalent about the whole personal growth thing. It’s not quite true that people don’t change, but changing oneself is a lot more difficult, and takes far longer, than is often assumed.
And I wonder why the perceived need to change. Are people uncomfortable within their own skin? From browsing the self-help aisle in bookstores, it seems to me that there must be a lot of folks that don’t like themselves very much. I feel that’s kinda sad.
I change my opinions all the time, I like to learn new stuff. I can change my habits and my diet. Those are all things external to me, though. But my “me”, my personality, my values– those things I’m hanging on to. It may not be much, it may not be very good, but it’s mine, and I’m stickin’ with it!

September 6th, 2008 at 9:45 amresponsibility is a big driving force for me to change. Change is not always welcomed easily but in the end you realize it was a good thing. I have 3 month old and I want her mother to bad a stay at home mom. For that to happen I needed to make more money. So from 3:45am to 8am I work at UPS and from 8am to 5pm I work my day job. Sometimes I have side jobs and those weeks I put in 80+ hours. Change it’s hard but when you step back see what comes from it you see what has come from the change. Soon I want have to work so much and I’ll be able to see my family more so I wait for that change.

Haha! Variety is good. No, it is great! Speaking of which, I’m trying a new recipe tonight!
