How to be creative.
Posted by Allison Mack | Filed under Blog
Just start creating.
I must say I don’t think I have ever been more inspired than I am right now. I am sitting in an art studio owned by an amazing artist, Jay Senetcho, lived and worked in by Chad Krowchuk, Gideon Flit, and Darcy Belscher, watching a music video directed, produced and designed by Chad starring Mark Hildreth!
I am blown away by the creativity and joy I am surrouned by.
Getting off a 14-hour day of directing and acting, only to be met with a wonderful glass of scotch and love filled artists celebrating art, life and humanity. Ah joy.
How do you be creative!
You just be!
Express yourself and love the experience. What you don’t know is a gift and to embrace your questions will break the skin that surrounds your skin! Pay attention and laugh.

November 11th, 2008 at 2:36 amOh wow…I can imagine how amazing and wonderful it is.
I’m not very artistic or creative but, I love earrings and I would like to learn to make earrings (and maybe other jewelry too). I don’t know if I ever will take a class but, it is an idea in the back of my mind.
Anyway, it is fantastic that you are surrounded by such talented people to learn and share your love of life, humanity and art.

November 11th, 2008 at 3:17 amWhat an great experience…and I swear that quote makes you feel good just by reading it.
I walk by an art studio every other day, and just seeing that place makes me feel more connected to the sensations and emotions I am feeling at that moment. I feel instantly more in tune with my imagination, and my own inspiration for the day.
The creativity bug is a great thing to catch!

Apparently, writing in English is not a requirement for this site. In reviewing (twice) every post made in the first 10 months this year, I have learned the expression “Allison, I will marry you someday” in 12 distinct languages including Sanskrit.

i want to sit in an art studio. right now. AHH don’t you just love the smell of turpentine and medium and fixative and all the wonderful chemicals that cause birth defects and cancer…i’m afraid my respiratory system is actually getting healthy now since i graduated from art school. i know, terrible, right? no, seriously. i really miss it. i need to grow spray some fixative around. im gonna go do that now.
anyways i looked up Jay’s website. He kind of reminds me of Jerome Witkin. Jerome witkin is amazing btw.

David Hayes Says:
November 11th, 2008 at 1:11 pmI always used Aquanet unscented hair spray as a fixative. It works great. Don’t cheap out on the paper because you never know when magic will happen, but it’s okay to cut corners on the fixative … if you know you’re really done with the rendering.

November 11th, 2008 at 1:21 pmI had a real shock a couple years ago. Notice the Elmer’s glue in the photo. I told someone this before I realized what I was saying and it hit home pretty hard. I used to stay up 50 hours straight to get models built on schedule. A lot of time was spent holding parts together waiting for the glue to set up. I finally burned out and dropped out. Years later someone was watching me use a hot glue gun and I casually said, “If I had had one of these when I was in colege, I probably would have stayed in school and got my degree.” I said that then froze and thought to myself “OH MY GOD!” Simple, cheap technology really has an amazing impact on our lives.

November 11th, 2008 at 3:55 pmKelly,
I never built a model before going to Architectural school. I don’t think they expect people to be able to have those skills in advance. Your skills at art and sculpting should serve you well to begin with and a strong math background is helpful. My school’s main focus was to reduce the class size by 2/3rd before the second year. I now build models from CAD (computer aided design) models. I’ll bet a lot of the manula skills like rendering drawings and making ink presentation drawings manully and drafting on a drafting board are all things of the past. So … don’t worry about building models.
-
David Hayes Says:
November 11th, 2008 at 3:59 pmHere’s the craziest model I ever made — even crazier than doing the statistics on Allison’s blog. I spent 3 days hand drawing the bricks on this model (white ink on red-brown match paper). The entire model took about 300 hours to make.

kelly Says:
November 11th, 2008 at 4:37 pmThats crazyy. haha i kind of like doing those kind of precise, repetitive things. For this one sculpture I coil built about 35 3″ x3″ perfect spheres, then cut out 1/8 of them. It took about an hour a sphere plus drying time. Overall that sculpture took about 4 hours a day for a month. Oh, and I made this insane kinetic metals piece. It’s copper and there is a plexiglass case with motors and hand-sawed gears and stuff underneath. Little plastic people move.
That project took over 4 months.
Anything and everything architectural is ridiculously tedious. It’s so worth it though.

It just hits me and I run with it for as long as I can before I lose it and end up sitting until some more comes. It is the best feeling in the world when it just hits me. November 12th, 2008 at 6:39 amTo compare my day with Allison’s. Two hour commute to and from work. Twelve hours at work solving product design problems. I have a wife and a 29 year old son at home. Neither have jobs. I get home. No supper. Trash gets picked up in the morning. The trash is all over the house. The garbage bags are missing. The sink is full of dirty dishes. The fridge is full of spoiled food. The dogs and cats need food and water. Before taking off my coat, I search the basement to find trash bags and begin picking up the trash in the house, empty the spoiled food from the fridge, search for new litter, empty the bag of litter into storage containers, empty bags of cat food into storage containers, change the litter, take the trash out, empty the dish washer, clean the dishes in the sink good enough for the dish washer to do the rest of the job, load and start the dish washer, clean the water bowls and fill them, feed the animals, put some pizza in the microwave for me. Now I have been home an hour. Go back to my bedroom with the pizza, take off my coat and decide to check a few more blog entries to de-bug the statistics spreadsheet. Before bed, I remember that I need to find financial records to prove that I can afford to by the house I am purchasing that is closer to home – a 3 bedroom cottage on ¾ acre very near a large lake which I am purchasing for the high price of $15,000.00. It is only missing a few essentials like kitchen counters and a bathroom vanity and a front door that will shut and a roof that will keep out the rain. No scotch for me. I don’t drink. … but I might start soon.
Here’s the fun part about trying to do the statistics without making mistakes while tired looking at white letters on a black background with tired, problem ridden eyes – examples of similarities in names of frequent posters to this blog:

November 12th, 2008 at 12:45 pmit is, in fact, my life-long dream to create as much as possible. use my gifts to their fullest. I want to design sets, creatures, space ships, robots, vehicles, and anything else in movies. I also want to eventually get into writing. it’s not just images that go through my mind, but entire civilizations. I want to create my own universe, and expand upon others that have potential. there’s so much out there, but, in all honesty, how much is really going to be remembered? how much of what we love today will be looked back at 150 years from now and people will say, “absolutely inspiring”? I want to create not to be remembered, but to inspire others to surpass that which inspired them.

November 12th, 2008 at 3:16 pmCreativity and Compassion. Love it. What is the draw of art? Is it in the creating? Creativity can have a intoxicating effect…it’s awesome. Is it in the sensation, how you feel when you experience art…or share your own? Again…ethereal at best. My gut response is that it is in the connection…The draw is not so much to art itself but to each other. True art is the expression of our humanity, longing for connection, empathy, compassion.
I know using the term ‘true art’ may be somewhat divisive, but I did say it was my gut response. Sounds kind of artsy, doesn’t it?
“Compassion is the emotional glue that keeps you rooted in the universality of the human experience, as it connects you to your essence and to the essence of those around you. It is the act of opening your heart”

That was a typo for both you an Brittny (who in my mind I think of as Britt NY … Britt New York, but I don’t know). A worse case is that I’m pretty sure that there are 2 people posting under the name “Jennifer,” so their totals are a team effort.
I just did 5 hours worth of cleanup on the spreadsheet and fixed a lot of name spellings and was feeling like I got a lot done … then realized that I was working on an outdated copy. Sometimes I stick around after work and unwind there then upload it to my site to grab at home. I last updated the spreadsheet at work and didn’t upload it. I hope I can remember what I did when I get access to the one from work again! Once that is done, I have only 7 more (relatively easy) blog entries to re-review. I tackled the hardest ones … the blog entries with the largest number of comments tonight. I should save this comment for the blog entry “How to be stupid” or “Creative ways to be stupid” or “Emergent Stupidity.” Somehow, I don’t think Allsion will ever post entries with those titles.

November 12th, 2008 at 9:01 pmSpeaking of Creativity, can you please post something about Talent?
My talents are the following:
As I’ve been told by everybody who knows me…I am a gifted artist..
I am a good “electrician” ? Weird? lol
I’m a good writer when I put my heart into it. I make art everyday. I draw, I sketch, I paint, I creat things like Hayes,I build sculptures made out of things. 7th grade I built a “piano” it was 7 feet long and about 3 feet tall.. I made it for the heck of it and I got awesome compliments from my whole family… I like helping at my school create the background sets for plays… creating things has become a passion for me… I think that I love to make stuff because it makes others wonder and smile, and it fills me with joy and love. I come straight home and I have to give birth to something new. I love what I do. I know it’s not what I want to do for a living, but what I want to do as a hobbie. But one thing I do consider is becoming an art tecaher some day. For highschool students. It would be fun. Here’s a link to THE MASH its an edition of the chicago tribune, the newpaper… its published each thursday and distributed to all CPS… CHICAO PUBLIC SCHOOLS highschools during the year.. And I love reading it because teenagers get to express themselve by publishing their thoughts. There anoher one It’s much bette its called NEW EXPRESSION. They aren’t publishing anythng anymore due to financial crisis I believe is what the editor told me, Im getting a job as a cartoonist as soon as its running again. Pretty cool huh??? I LOVE IT! umm… i am not good at explaining things. but you get me right? Uh?? so… yeah… there are very cool newspapers for teens, in which they cold publish their poetry, thoughts, like blogs, but on paper, and those good students who care to pick it up, can read others feelings and ideaologies, then get inspired! -

Sherann Johnson Says:
November 13th, 2008 at 12:08 pmCreativity wise, I’m always trying to be different than everybody else. I like being my own individual person and doing just random stuff with my clothes and the style of art that I do. I’ll do stuff like…cut the toes off my toe socks and wear them over my fingers, and purposefully wearing a two different socks everyday just to be different. In my artwork I like to do random stuff like painting my hands and taking pictures of them .
I just love being unique and having my own creativity and style.
-
David Hayes Says:
November 13th, 2008 at 12:52 pmJust don’t put being unique over being happy. Some peopledon’t allow themselves to enjoy the ordinary pleasures of life just because they don’t want to be like everyone else. There is always a lot of talk about being yourself despite pressure to conform, but people rarely talk about being yourself despite the pressure to NOT conform. Usually “not conforming” means “conforming to a splinter, minority group rather than the mainstream (whatever that is anymore).” After all, how many of us truly want to be alone and have nothing in common with anyone else?

I wish I could go like Willie Coyote and buy some ACME stuff to build a super trap and help you with that one….
I read someone suggest buying a camera. You probably gonna loose one more Plasma, but at least you gonna be able to help to catch those sick bastards.
Im sorry for what you going through… But get some action and kick their ass! Or make someone kick them for you… The last one is safer…
Or you can leave them a glass of milk and cookies with a polite note requesting if they could leave you alone.
It may not work… but they are certainly gonna be distracted and take more time… If you can’t catch them, at least confuse/spoil them.
Lots of Gnome hugs for you!!!

November 14th, 2008 at 2:13 amI haven’t watched it yet. I was at the auction of my Mother-in-law’s house … watching a lovely home appraised at $220,000.00 sell for $65,500.00. I’ll watch Smallville tonight after work.
All I want to know was how cute was Mini-Chloe? And will she have a mini-Blog soon?
And Arash, have at it with the stats. Right now, they don’t do justice to people who have just come on board and been regular commenters since. It would have been nice if I could have ‘rated’ or evaluated comments as I went to filter for double postings and off topic comments just to have other kinds of stats — like which types of blog entries really pulled people in the most. For instance, one set of blog entry comments took on an entirely new direction when Allison’s “Smallville” contract went into negotiation and people came to the current blog entry to beg her to continue on as Chloe.
-
David Hayes Says:
November 14th, 2008 at 7:26 amA problem with the stats I did versus the stats that Allison can probably view is that I can only count comments, not views (or hits). In a sense, I was screwing up Allison’s stats by going back and viewing the old blog entries over and over again and increasing her view count.
So, my stats in no way tell a complete or accurate story. It’s like the stories I posted in the Scribbles portion of Allison’s forum back when I was a member. The three stories in one topic only ever got comments posted by 1 other person, yet the view count is slowly approaching 500. I would like to think that some of the ‘viewers’ actually read the stories, but you really don’t know unless they comment. I do know that if I had to count all the people that viewed Allison’s blogs (whether they posted or not), I couldn’t possibly have taken the time to compile the information.

That would be funny to see the mini-Lex, mini-Chloe, mini-Lana and mini-Clark all together. I really wish the series would have started with the cast at a younger age … or at least done a lot more flash backs to their younger selves.

November 15th, 2008 at 3:24 pmNOBODY WRITES LETTERS ANYMORE!!
hey everybody, I’ve been away i have returned, have laughed myself silly with some of your comments and gotten coked up by others…but I went for a run this morning on beautiful still morning and it got me a thinking about everyone and thing thats important to me…thats being creative right????
so heres what i came up with…
…the internet is potentially the greatest invention I will see in my life time and don’t get me wrong I love it, the music at my finger tips etc but what about letters.
Growing up my grandmother would write to me on occassions and there is nothing like running to the mail book and finding the physical presents of a letter… the joy of ripping it open and reading something from someone you love! Snail mail as it’s now refered to is a dying thing, even my bills are mostly electronic now. And don’t get me wrong getting a personal email from a friend or loved one is great, paying a bill in 30 seconds also simple….
But I miss getting letters, I miss looking at the hand writting and knowing the effort someone went to to let you know they we’re thinking of you..is perhaps our culture unknowingly just getting lazier and lazier???? or my or less thoughtful of one another??? or have we started to be numbed by the wonders of technology and all the slack it now can pick up????
I don’t know about you but I think I might go for a run, shower and then sit down and write someone a letter….so they can feel that special moment of ripping open the envelope in anticipation of hope and love!!

i love it too!
i think that everyone should sit
down and write a meaningful
or not (eventhough sitting down to write is meaningful in its own way)
to a person they care about… and send it to them
that will put a smile on anyones face…
not just getting bills and adverts anymore, but a letter from someone who cares. -

November 16th, 2008 at 3:21 amThis is a quick one.
Creativity is a great thing. I’ve been doing it for years. They say creative projects can be therapeutic.
However, lately writing isn’t doing the trick. Watching other creative works is.
I just finished watching an anime this weekend. I don’t watch a lot of it, I’m mostly into video games, but there are some amazing animes out there. The past couple I watched reached me. This one felt amazing. It was both depressing and incredibly uplifting at different points and in different ways. It felt like having the scar tissue of my emotional heart peeled away and then the rawest layers massaged and rubbed soothingly to rejuvenate me.
I’m a little sad I finished it, because what I got out of it was something I’ve been needing most of my life. I can try to recapture those feelings and build upon them, but it’s so much easier to say that and so much harder to accomplish.
When I die, I can only hope that I’ll have the opportunity to feel at least this good. And I know that might sound odd or creepy, but it means more to me to say that while I still can. Because I have no way of knowing when my last moment might be or how.

November 16th, 2008 at 7:03 pmI liked the comment about writing letters. I remember the wonderful feeling I used to get upon receiving a letter from a friend or relative. Before email, I used to write 4 or 5 letters year to different people I cared about. I know that’s not much, and that now, through email I write much more often, but most emails get deleted or never again read whereas a physical letter is a treasure and can be read over and over again. I used to imagine my friend, cousin, etc. sitting at a table somewhere penning the words that I was reading. Such wonderful memories. Sometimes I write down my thoughts just to remember what it feels like to use a pen and paper.

arash Says:
November 16th, 2008 at 9:23 pmSorry, that was a joke, I thought every body knows about those Nigerian e-mails.
I have a story;
Nothing was more valuable than the mails we recieved in the army. Hundreds of us; soldiers, circling around the guy who stood up on a rock and yelled out the name of those lucky ones who had a mail. You could hear everybody’s heartbeat. Once I got a letter from my mom and dad and after reading it a million times, I got a pen and paper and I start writing to them, just for the fun of it I replied to my mom imitating her hand writing and the section to my dad was imitation of his.
Two weeks later, I get a chance to make a phone call and I spoke to my mom. I asked her; “Did you get my letter”.
She said;”NO, not only that, but the one we sent you was returned”.

David Hayes Says:
November 17th, 2008 at 6:56 amWhat amazes me is how easily we can communicate these days … and still fail to. It seems that, for every advantage of modern technology, we suffer some setbacks. As easily as relatives can get in touch, it is even easier for strangers trying to sell things to you to get into your home via the net. And after wading through all that junk e-mail, you feel a little less like sending e-mail to anyone. When word processing first came on the scene, I asked a secretary how much easier it had made her life. She gave me an angry stare and said that before word processors, people came to her to have letters typed and the letters were READY to be typed and sent. With word processors, the letters came to her missing information and half finished with the idea of eventually getting the letter done. The effect is that no one has to decide anything and the secretary was typing each letter 12 or more times. Then copiers made it so easy to make a copy that suddenly everyone got a copy of everything. That should mean that people are more informed, but instead it means people are so buried in stuff that they don’t need to know about that they miss the few things they need to be aware of. Plus, if anything distributed is wrong, tracking down the bad information and keeping it from spreading has become a massive job. Then, all this became perceived as so easy, that suport positions like secretaries were eliminated giving the rest of the work force more to get done in the same 8 hour day. Something’s got to give … and it does.

November 17th, 2008 at 11:30 amHello mother, hello father,
Here I am at Camp Grenada.
Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we’ll have some fun if it stops raining!I went hiking with Joyce Fivey,
He developed poison ivy.
You remember Lennard Skynard,
He got tomain poisoning last night after dinner! All the counselors hate the waiters,
And the lake has alligators!
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called ‘Ulysses’.No, I don’t want (this should scare ya),
But my bunkmate has malaria!
You remember Geoffrey Hardy,
They’re about to organize a searching party!Take me home, oh mother, father.
Take me home, I hate Grenada.
Don’t leave me out in the forest,
Where I might get eaten by a bear!Take me home, I promise that I will not make noise,
Or mess the house with other boys.
Oh please don’t make me stay;
I’ve been here one whole day!Dearest father, darling mother,
How’s my precious little brother?
Let me come home if you miss me;
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me!Wait a minute; it stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing.
Playing baseball; gee that’s better.
Mother, father, kindly disregard this letter! -

gonna stay at the Y M C A.
I’m seeing the new ads for toys for Christmas. The toy manufactures want kids to do their drawings on digital input pads and print them off their computers. Maybe they should skip printing them and just e-mail the images to the LCD screen on the front of the refrigerator.

November 17th, 2008 at 2:20 pmOMG! I just found out by accident that I misspelled “Smallville” on the front cover of my book “Smallville: AU.” I don’t know how I’ll get back all the copies in print to replace them. I must have nearly umm … three … copies out there. OKAY! TWO copies. I exaggerated a little. You see, there are no editors to check things like this anymore. And spell check doesn’t help with “Smallville.” “Smallville” is always highlighted as if its spelled wrong.

November 17th, 2008 at 9:23 pmRight on, Allison! Just yesterday i started a novel. I had allowed the idea of writing a novel to become an overwhelming burden to me. The fear of failure was definitely snipping at my heels.
But I finally realized I just had to get in there and do it. Like when I had to take over for the Drama Team director at my church. There is no grand moment of “Now I feel 100% ready.” You just have to jump in with both feet and hope for the best.
I loved your post on pride and fear – very inspiring. I copied part of it and I will keep it on hand while I’m writing the novel to remind myself. Thanks so much!

November 18th, 2008 at 7:12 amDid Cliff retire? He used to make excellant notes on what he read so we didn’t have to go through all the work.
I’ve got box loads of books I haven’t read. Eye problems made it difficult to sit down and read before the last eight eye surgeries. I have read only one book since. I have to concentrate more on making my eyes behave than the book’s content. Thank God excellant performers like John Glover are willing to read books for me. I should take more advantage of that. I did experiment with having the computer read to me, but that was kind of annoying. The computer pronounced “Chloe” as “Klow.” Maybe the computer felt Chloe’s relationship with all computers made it okay for it to refer to her on a more personal level.

I seriously recommend getting Stephen King’s “Night Shift” audio book from your library. John Glover doesn’t simply read the book — he acts it. I didn’t think I could have a greater appreciation of his skills until I heard that CD. I guess he grills a mean toated cheese sandwich too!

November 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm”The Day The Internet Died”
based upon “American Pie” by Don McLeanA short, short time ago…
I can still remember
How that world wide web would make me smile.
I knew if I could post a lot
That I might make a good joke … maybe not
But, perhaps, we’d all be happy for a while. But November I got unconnected.
The web was broken and I … dejected.
No news on my home page –
An abrupt ending to a golden age.I can remember that I cried
When my modem let out a final sigh
And something left me deep inside …
The day the internet died.So bye-bye, Miss Allison’s Blog.
Drove my keyboard to its limit,
Now the posters are gone.
Allison’s at Jay’s drinkin’ a scotch and rye
Singin’, “I’ll direct until the day that I die.
Yes, I’m directin’ ‘till the day that I die.”Did you post to the blog of love?
And would you have faith in God above,
If Allison told you to?
Do you believe in micro finance …
Or just forget the world and dance …
And have property emerge by chance?I’m clueless to what a human construct is …
Perhaps a term used in show biz?
And if Juicy Peaches are such a hit,
Why do I always end up … with just a pit?I was a lonely, old-aged postin’ ****
Who got hit by the Cookie Lady’s pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the internet died.So bye-bye, Miss Allison’s Blog.
Drove my keyboard to its limit,
Now the posters are gone.
Allison’s at Jay’s drinkin’ a scotch and rye
Singin’, “I’ll direct until the day that I die.
Yes, I’m directin’ ‘till the day that I die.”Now for ten days we’ve been on our own
Actively lazy and skippin’ stones,
’Cross still ponds of icy water.
Remembering when posters sang for Mack Events,
And many readers came and went
Seeking words to lift their spirits higher. And while Allison directed Tom,
New blog entries were all but gone.
The comments became more random
Is this what becomes of fandom?
As Jendi pulled out paper and pen
Others did too … the crowd grew thin
And I found myself alone again
The day the internet died.So bye-bye, Miss Allison’s Blog.
Drove my keyboard to its limit,
Now the posters are gone.

Ross UK Says:
November 18th, 2008 at 5:43 pmI’ve never really been one for letters. My grandmother used to write to my brothers and me when we were very young, but now I much prefer to keep in touch with people by phone or, more frequently these days, on networking sites like Facebook. The majority of my friends are registered there now and I can be reasonably certain they’re receiving any messages I send in good time and you can have real time conversations with people a world away on Facebook or Windows Messenger without it costing a fortune.
The only time I write letters these days is when I need to complain about something. Has anyone else noticed that in this age of instant and widespread communication where every company has websites, email addresses and customer service hotlines, it is virtually impossible to make a complaint? I find the worst offenders for this are generally the very companies that are based on the web, such as ISPs and online shopping sites. When it comes to giving them money it happens in a digital instant, but when you’re not happy you have to write by snail mail – if you can even find a postal address – and wait 28 days for a response.
I still occasionally receive letters but I haven’t actually opened any in about three weeks because I know what they all are – bank statements, umpteen offers to give me credit I don’t need or want, and the occasional bill that is paid automatically. They’re all sitting on my dining table unopened until I remember where I put my shredder.

November 19th, 2008 at 6:24 am“People think computers will keep them from making mistakes. They’re wrong. With computers you make mistakes faster.” – Adam Osborne
I personally hate the idea of a paperless office – it was that idea that cost me my last job. There was a computer malfunction that lost us some of our records and they accused me of falsifying things deliberately and sacked me. There was no evidence and there was no paper trail to exonerate me. It was all trumped up anyway – they were sacking as many people as they could since axing empty posts is cheaper than making a third of the workforce redundant…

November 20th, 2008 at 6:44 amHmmm. Tried looking up the artist Allison mentioned. I guess she missed a ‘k’ in his name. It’s Jay Senetchko, if anyone else wants to look him up. As I type this, I keep dropping e’s and have to go back and edit … so no big deal about a missing K.
It’s going to take a truck load of caffiene to keep me awake today. Looks like winter is here in Ohio. I guess I should up my exercise regiment to make myself feel more rested. Today, I did 20 reps of my snooze alarm button slams. I think I’ll up it to 25 tomorrow and see if that helps.

Wow. The quote is even beautiful in a language I don’t understand … like English.
Lydia does a great job translating these blogs. But she is far too sane to attempt translating our comments!

David Hayes Says:
November 20th, 2008 at 7:12 am“Le “Chloe Sullivan’s Site” est un site à but non lucratif, ….”
It’s funny how “Non-profit” or “Not for Profit” translates into something that looks like “Not Lucrative.” It’s the same root and means “a gain” but it’s funny how the change in a word makes you think about a concept. A non-profit organization doesn’t directly produce an income. A not for profit organization might produce an income, but that’s not what it’s there for. But if you think of profit as money, that’s one thing. But if you think in terms of “gain,” yes, a non-profit organization is there to generate gains — in the welfare, the dignity, the standard of living for those it serves.
People are certainly better off … have richer, more enjoyable lives … due to the efforts of people like Bouroux and Lydia creating a site for French speaking fans of Allison.
I guess the organizations that don’t fare as well are “Non-Prophet” organizations — ones not led by people with a vision.

Sorry. Still waiting until there is more coffee available so I can kick this day into gear. I hate having crutches … but they fill a temporary need. At least I’m not at the point of putting coffee grounds under my tongue. And I did kick the mountain dew habit after I went from having 2 cavities in my first 4.5 decades of life and getting 13 in a single year of Mountain Dew dependency. Now they’ve come out with the statistics on low weight births due to caffeine intake, so I will definitely quit drinking caffeinated beverages … if I get pregnant.

November 20th, 2008 at 10:49 amWow, that’s wierd. I was actually able to read and understand Lydia’s translation and I haven’t had to speak French in nearly 10 years. Strange how it sticks with you. Of course reading it and taking the time to puzzle it out is easier than having to converse in it. That was always my problem – not being able to translate my thoughts into another language fast enough. That’s why I can read three or four languages but can only have a semi-coherent conversation in my own. My parents probably don’t help – they occasionally buy me random books in other languages but I never read them. I ask you, who’s going to take the time to read “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in Latin when they haven’t even read it in English?
