a new and shiney computer!
Posted by Allison Mack | Filed under Blog
OOOOO and AHHHH! I was eying the new Mac Books and then I just so happened to fry my old one when a whole carton of almond milk spilled in my bag all over my computer. Ever wonder if things that seem so coincidentally accidental are actually intentional on a subconscious level? I am not sure, but it is something to think about.
Sorry I have been a bit disconnected lately. I have lots changing and shifting in my life right now and as an effect everything seems a little up in the air and out of it. I am working on finding my footing and all will be right soon. I look forward to reconnecting with the community!

May 13th, 2009 at 5:48 amHey that’s a good idea Ally. My laptops getting pretty old. Maybe I should ‘accidentally’ spill something on it too. Then I’d be forced to buy a new one. Kidding. I am so not that desperate. And I believe you when you say it was accidental so you’re not either.
Enjoy your shiny new Mac Book.

May 13th, 2009 at 7:41 amI always have trouble finding my footing at the beginning of summer vacation, so give yourself some time. It’s like I need a new routine, and feel lost without it, whilst at the same time I’m so elated to be without the looming drudgery of the stinkin routine! A love hate relationship. I love the freedom…but get a little loopy without the structure at the same time. Does this make sense?

May 13th, 2009 at 10:08 pmBUT … did you get a new PEN?
I wanted this week to relax and mentally prepare for a job fair on Friday this week. Instead, I had to do hard physical labor through today and now every part of me aches. So, I went on line to see if any employers in my field had signed up for the fair and … over 10,000 people applied which blew out the computer system so registration confirmation didn’t go out. Neither did the notice that the fair was moved to a larger convention hall and ONE DAY EARLIER! I am not ready. (I promise to get to the “pen” part soon.) So my wife said I should take my step-son along so he can find a job too. He had just this week been told that, since his finance degree was earned in 2002, that employers no longer considered it valid. He and his degree are out of date. He is the advanced age of 29. So, when I found out that I may be in a crowd of well over 10,000 people and only one employer from a distant community hiring in my field, I really didn’t think it would be worth it. But my step-son could work for at least 50 of the employers, so I should go for his sake. Then I read what was expected of job seekers. My last employer told me that if I showed up for an interview wearing a tie, he would not even consider me for employment. That was almost 10 years ago. I didn’t wear a tie and I got the job. And I don’t remember ever wearing a tie on the job (and the job was a professional job — design engineer). So, for the job fair, you are expected to wear a tailored suit and all the trimmings. And some of these jobs are for the fast food industry. Everyone is supposed to carry a leather satchel with a leather clad binder for a notebook. The real killer is the instructions say that people who seriously want a job need to carry and use an expensive and elegant pen — that the pen says a lot about a person. OH MY GOD! This is a university run job fair. They are probably just passing along what it takes to get a job these days. And what’s the problem buying a nice pen if it gets you the job? Show them that you’ll play the image game and that you know that the appearance of professionalism is more important than anything else. I imagine two candidates show up for a position at a research hospital. One says “Give me a job, a lab and the proper equipment and in two years, I’ll give you the cure to cancer,” but he carries a Bic pen that go for 12 for a dollar. The next candidate says, “Give me a job, a lab and the proper equipment and in two years, I’ll learn how to SPELL kanser!” … and he carries the Cadillac of pens. Do the human resources people say, “Let’s go with the guy with the snazzy pen!” ??
Well, I have to go try to distill my 30 years experience into a few sentences and spray paint my Bic pen with metallic designer paint. Only six hours until I have to hit the road. Maybe tomorrow (because it is already 1:00am here), I can do something more enjoyable … like getting a root canal.

May 13th, 2009 at 10:52 pmTalking about Pen,
Yesterday I went to renew my Health Card (Yes in Canada we have health cards

Now david if you are taking a Mac Notebook and a pen, the interview might not go as well as you plan.

I’m prepared! I’m taking my Etch-A-Sketch! (by OHIO Arts).
I’m all ready to go. It’s 2:30am. Have to be up in 4.5 hours to get to the job fair when it opens.

I’m thinking about ‘degrees of separation.’ Yesterday … well, officially, 2 days ago, a man from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee who claims to be one of Dolly Parton’s 2nd cousins begged every last dollar (I had on me) off of me as I waited for a tow truck in Canton, Ohio. And Dolly was in a movie that starred Allison. I wonder why I think about things like this when I am tired out of my mind and facing a big new day in a few hours.
Goodnight.

May 14th, 2009 at 1:48 amHi Allison,
Well, you know what Freud said: “There are no coincidences.” Well, whether this is true or not is probably a matter of opinion. I think there are coincidences for sure, but a lot of things that seem so coincidental are actually the opposite. Be this as it may, every time you write a posting like this I think it was so right to stay here. I came here by chance. I was looking for something in the internet and Google referred me to your blog. I remember I wondered what I was supposed to do here. Hence, I left because I was looking for something completely different. However, I came back in less than five minutes for I was referred to your page again. So I started to read. I didn’t find the reason why Google referred me to your blog, but I liked what I read and so I did my first reply. Well, I guess that’s an example for sheer chance.
Quote: “Sorry I have been a bit disconnected lately. I have lots changing and shifting in my life right now and as an effect everything seems a little up in the air and out of it. I am working on finding my footing and all will be right soon. I look forward to reconnecting with the community!“
- It’s alright, Allison. Take your time.

I know how this is like by own experience and my best friend. She’s a lot in such situations and hopes every now and then that I have some panacea for her. Well, I’m only human too, but she’s my friend so I do my best in order to help her.take care,

May 14th, 2009 at 3:54 amDavid Hayes,
I don’t know about job fair recruiters, but it would seem to me that a person in your shoes would already be an aficionado of the pen market. I know for me, I like getting different writing implements, and they don’t have to be expensive to be cool. Right now I’m into multi-function pens, and of course I have Bics, both medium and fine points. But when I saw the Staples “Quatrex” I *HAD* to have one! Heh. The Quatrex has black, blue, and red inks with a 7mm pencil. It also has an optional stylus that you can replace one of the standard points with. Jeeze, I love my Quatrex with it’s sleek brushed aluminum finish, and dappled comfort grip that let’s the sheen of the metal show through all the way to the tip, rather than covering the entire grip in plastic. What a great pen for all occasions, from note taking to slashing budgets, and ready to switch from paper to PDA. +ahem+
I hope you enjoy your new computer Allison.

David Hayes Says:
May 14th, 2009 at 4:20 amJade Ruby,
I used to have a love affair with the Niji Stylus. It had a beautiful fine line and I used to sketch tiny illustrations with them without worrying about the pen bleeding. They also didn’t run out after a few lines. But today, I have trouble finding a good pen but I make anything available work for me. I actually prefer a good soft lead drawing pencil if I need to sketch a shaded image. I got a WACOM tablet with pen to try to get into the 21st century, but I haven’t developed the knack for using it yet.
-
Jade Ruby Says:
May 14th, 2009 at 4:58 amDavid,
It seems to me that it takes a real knack for the regular tablets as there is a difference in projecting onto the screen when there is no feedback on the actual drawing surface. Wacom has those new touch screen moniters to try and get around that. I don’t know, but there should be a drawing tablet like that Etch-A-Sketch you nmentioned where at least the artist would have a direct feedback on the actual drawing surface as well as on the monitor.
