Cool. I especialy like the pictures of all the people with their diaries all over the world. Interrestingly enough I only saw one guy, all the rest where girls ! So apparently keeping a diary stays a feminine attitude.. I wonder why… Especialy when you think that the vast majority of litterature at least until mid 20th century was male litterature ! Maybe men are writing stuff on their computers, who knows… Now i really wonder why diaries are so feminine. You guys like more the little things, personnal things in life ? Isn’t it a cliché ?
And it’s a man who confectionates the diaries ! Ha !
The problem with my handwritting is I can almost never read me afterwards… Whis is problematic unless I want to expose my scribellings as a graphic work of art… But I fear this would not work either ! But my typing skills on the other hand are… well no they’re neither great… That’s aproblem cause sometimes I feel my best lines or ideas are blazing fast… Or maybe I just think this because it bypasses even any intelligent analysis ! Once I tried a vocal typewriting stuff, you know like you speak and your computer writes. Montaigne wrote his “Essays” like this. I mean not with a computer, of course. I guess it was a cute neighbour he eyed on for quite a few weeks. Kidding. Anyway what was I saying ? Yeah, the computer vocal dictaphone. Well let me tell you this doesn’t really work. I mean I had high hopes that with this tool I would have an amazing efficiency concerning my great novel to come. But the thing is the only efficiency it had is it translated it directly into japonese… As I can’t read from right to left (or is it also vertically ?) because my religion and my stomach forbid me, I had to interrupt.
It made my first pages on my Woody Allen thesis look like some late Rimbaud work…
Anyway I’ll try again sometime ! Ho yeah I also have this great pen like you writes with it on a kind of tablet and then you usb connect it to a computer. Useless. Plus doesn’t work with Mac. Not you, Allison, I’m sure it would work with you, cause what would not ?!!

    Ciao, take care

Hey btw, what does “rad” means ? The only thing I’ve find that does makes sense on the internet is “acronym for “Rapid Application Developpement”"… Wait a second here… (yeah i know there are two quotations marks side by side but that’s not it) Uh yeah : does it really makes sense ? Alternative : it’s his name ? Hmm… A cool abreviation for “random” ? I’m lost in conjectures… (or maybe in the translation !)

Hey I got it ! It’s Radical ! Thanks Wordrefference.com ! Makes so much more sense than “Rapid Application Developpement”… Improve your english vocabulary with Allisson Mack’s blog !

Great quote indeed. i had to read it a dozen times cause a lot of terms are problematic… So in a way we’re a medium for a life force (outside of us) but we’re translating this force to something absolutely unique because everyone of us is. I read it as actualising endless potentialities. But key word is “action” here, cause it’s through this action that you actualy enter in contact with this universal life force. maybe you could say that through action you escape from yourself, only to find it again as an action realised, be it art or maybe anything else realised – a good action ? – and this action realised is the expression of your uniqueness – that maybe you would never have found without action ?
Interresting also this idea of not judging what we do, that our only concern is to act and channelling this energy. I’ve read and practice a great book for all musicians called “Effortless mastery” by Kenny Werner where it was stated almost the same things. I highly recommend reading it for those interrested -it’s more for the musician though, and focus a lot on improvisation – but impro could also link to a lot of different activities like theater for example… Il also wonder if the fact Marta Graham was a choregrapher plays an important role in the ideas she express here. I guess it is, and it would also explain the focus on action and the idea of movement here. But there is no doubt it extends to art in general and even action and singularity in general.
Singularity in general… My God ! No no no, I must not judge anything, it’s just the life force, I must keep the channel open !!

    Be well, Allison and All

    Hi Allison.
Yesterday, I visit with my wife and my daughter at Montreal .
“TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition takes you on a journey back in time to experience the legend of Titanic like never before. The galleries in this fascinating exhibition feature over 288 real artifacts recovered from the ocean floor along with room re-creations and personal stories: each highlighting a different chapter in the compelling story of Titanic’s maiden voyage.”
It was an incredible experience. See pieces of the vessel, crockery, bags, which have almost a hundred years and have stayed on the ocean floor for over 80 years is amazing.
What impressed me most is being able to touch a piece of the hull of the Titanic with my fingers. An indescribable feeling.
Returning to the exhibition, we watched the movie Titanic by James Cameron. This view was much different from previous ones, yet it was the same videotape.
I felt watching the film after exposure to a multitude human feelings. In the film you can see the best and worst of humanity. This film is really fabulous because it is a perfect blend of history, humanity, love, compassion, greed and action.

Drawing on the plate for the second class passengers of the Titanic to the film itself, the artists were amazed and continue to do so. Allison, what wonderful work you have the chance to do.
I look forward to have news from your present and future projects.
Have a good weekend and take care of you.

    Hi Allison.
Recently I read an article on a very popular singer from Montreal who just returned from a long rehabilitation. He said he had never written a song without alcohol and drugs.
His doctor told him that if he continued to use such substance to create, in two years he died.
We seem to have much tolerance for artists while athletes in the sport, someone who uses drugs to improve performance is condemned and his career is ruined.
The athlete and the artist are models and sources of inspiration.

The work of a clean artist as more or less valuable than that of the artist who needs drugs?
What artist best represents humanity and compassion?
Should we do like in sport to have honest performance ?

It is most difficult to try and explain the difference of where the inspiration comes from when trying to compare an athlete and an artist when talking about drugs in a generic manner. You ask, “how come an artist is accepted when he/she uses mind altering substances to increase or enhance the creative process, but an athlete is condemned for using body enhancing drugs to enhance performance?” I don’t know, but it seems like two separate categories to me. I think maybe if you were to take a cultural twist and all artists such as songwriters only competed directly with each other; say *every* song is written by artists in competition with each other at an auditorium, to be judged fit to be performed *before* it can be performed, *then* perhaps mind altering substances would be frowned on or banned for artists such as songwriters. Until then, it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

As it is, an artist’s work stands separate from the artist most of the time, especially when talking about something like songwriting. It is that work of art that is accepted or rejected on it’s own merits, not the state of mind that the artist wanted to be in when he/she created the work.

If an artist takes the Extasy, he loses his inhibitions and is an advantage compared to the artist who did not. It’s like the athlete who takes a drug to be more calm and flexible in gymnastics or for which tests are judged. Its performance will be compared with each other. When we lose our inhibitions, we lose our soul. This is not really us. I always thought that art was the expression of the soul of the artist.
If the message is that the end justifies the means, this is not a good message to society.
It is true that great works were written as a result of sorrows of love but I do not agree that the artist began artificially distress to create.
I think a true artist must be authentic.

Quite funny. No sincerely I strongly disagree with this view. Because the results on what basis we are appreciating art and sports are very different. In sports there is a direct relations between a better performance and taking drugs. The principle is competition and everyone is supposed to be equal, because it has to be fair in relation to “natural” habilities and hard work. But in arts… who care ? And even if there were a direct correlation between a better painting or book etc and the use of a drug… well in this case what does the artist or whoever not our business. In other terms the reasons we invoque for penalising someone in sport does not apply in arts. This would be judgement, or moral, which is equal. Whereas I’m all for ethic, which is completely different. There is only our own relations to things, no idea of bad and good exists written in the sky beyond our beings. ( I can’t find it in English but in french it would be the difference between Bien-Mal et bon-mauvais) Perhaps drinking help a writer or a philosopher or whoever to work for a certain time. And then, because he’s ill, because it forbid him to work, it’s not good anymore. Then he should stop. But it’s his business.
You say these guys are models… Well but whose fault is it ? Is it the model’s fault ? Or the person who takes someone he does not even know for a model ? Or the industry brainwashing people from the youngest age, hand to hand with religion in a lot of cases ? No wonder lot of stars get lost. But I think this is may be precisely because some people say “you are a role model”. Then they’ll prove you wrong… Ironic ! Your source of inspiration should be in the work of an artist, not in his private life. This is the this I can’t stand in our times : this kind of cult of personality. Art has nothing to do with this. But, anyway, maybe I’ll write later on this, should it interest one person…

    Have a good we

I know to some, this may sound silly, but make sure you have a Bible that you can take notes by writing in it. Then, it’s easier to find verse and chapter years later.

Okay, so I’ve surfed the web looking for news of you, your missed girl! I finally realized that your probably busy- duh with the Premire of Smallville. Can’t wait! I’m looking forward to finding out about what happens to Chloe on the show! Talk about intense! I hated how clark treats her, but I’m hoping that she doesn’t let him get away with it. Anyway, I can’t wait to hear from you and watch the show soon. I bought season 8- pre-ordered. I can’t wait to get it in August.
    My kids & I are going to have a Smallville-A-thon! :-)

The crowd clapped and laughed because of how he said it. Sam said it was totally professional. Michael was kidding Sam about the kiss. Makes me wish I was Sam in that scene. Peter

I feel like going off topic here, so I’ll post about one of my favs, dreaming. . .

I think that a lot of people have yet to enter the vast dialog that is available to us in our dreams. Some are used to just dismissing this time of alteration of consciousness that most people experience each and every time they sleep. With so much in the way of Western scientific empiricism, lots of people think that dreams are mostly to be ignored. But what of the ancients? Is it such that we can say it’s just that they weren’t privy to our new information, so they really had no clue about what is going on in the brain? Or could it be that indeed, without all our fancy equipment they still found. . . (sound of a gong).

Well, listen up! Today, yes we have new information and new technology, and what that does is give us an even greater chance to see (heh) that there is much more going on in the brain that starts to delve into places where many folks fear to tread. You can find out that the inner worlds hold a vast reservoir of information that has yet to be tapped for our own use as we manipulate our physical environment in the pursuits of happiness, fulfillment, joy, contentment, and wholeness.

It seems to me that even without attempting to fathom the mysteries of our creation that may lie deep within the consciousness just waiting to be touched, smelled, and tasted, there still is the simple matter (heh) of the simple pleasures associated with developing dreamscapes– finding out that entire universe who resides in the Grey matter.

I see that even the venerable Paulist Press has published a work on dreams called, “Dreams and Spiritual Growth, A Christian Approach to Dreamwork” (1984). This book on dream methodology is aimed at both the layperson *and* the religious, to tap into God’s call to the individual and the community. My personal favorite is Stephen LaBerge’s, “Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming,” where he gives information on how to use the best dreamwork techniques based on 20 years of dream research at Stanford University. His latest work, “Lucid Dreaming: A Concise Guide to Awakening in Your Dreams and in Your Life” even contains a CD with dream induction sessions.

So yes, science has followed in the footsteps of the ancients in attempting to unlock the potential hidden in the brain, and revealed by dreams. What about you? Have you taken a sincere look at your own dreams lately?

Pretty interesting perspective,Jade. I do tend to dream allot. I hesistate in adding a response to this line on thought on Allison’s blogg though. I do want to respect her website. I don’t want to offend her, because Christ is not to be pushed on anyone.
Nevertheless, let me just say that I agree with you.

Actually one of the best sources of inspiration for one to step up and attempt to create art, is to tap into the dreams. Be it painting, music, acting, fiction, poetry, dramatic or comedy screenplays; dreams are mostly untapped by our artists and hobbyists as LaBerge describes in his advice to professionals.

I’ve checked out the site of Deaf Messanger, his art is nice, but not exactly to my taste.

    state of the art

All of the rampant individualism in Western culture, combined with the miracles of technologies that brings us the freedom to possess such a marvelous variety of objects, has lead to a slippage in our abilities to commune with each other. There is a widespread tendency to want to “be on top” in this climate of competition for goods, and people’s Souls.

What takes hold of a person to have the desire to scream their “superiority” over someone else, yet go away to little fulfillment in the Life that they are trying to live on their own? How come?

Is it even possible to have a conversation without a constant jockeying for superiority? Yes? No?

What about the future? Are you going to be obsessed with dominating the Jones? Or are you ready to look at the life of your (gasp) grandchildren’s grandchildren? When is it that you are going to want to save the other guy instead of beating him/her down for that oh so momentary pleasure?

I have a question about reflection of work/projects. As a drama student, I’ve often been advised to keep a journal reflecting on my classes and personal experiences regarding the arts. I’ve been told that this may help to look at the past, incorporate the present and seek new challenges in the future and generally just look back on my individual thoughts and so on. My question is, have you, Ally, ever keep anything similar to this? I don’t mean like this blog. I’m talking about a personal journal including reflection of your work, project by project and if so, do you think this has assisted your personal growth and creative process?

This question occured to me when I discovered that I’m not required to keep a journal this semester and I’m curious as to whether it would help to keep one just for me, not my teacher.

Also, what does everyone else think of this?

    xoxo
    Beth

    Hello Beth,

Journaling is always a good idea for oneself. I’ve kept a journal, and used it regularly off and on for years, depending on my mood. Even if I don’t keep up with it daily, I seldom leave home without it, I have it on me right now.

In her book, “The Artist’s Way,” Julia Cameron suggests journaling 3 pages every morning. Though at this point in time I don’t feel like making daily entries, I found that morning is a very good idea for a journaling time, and when I am at my peak for journaling daily, that is when I prefer; though I don’t find myself adamant about generating 3 pages daily no matter my mood as Cameron suggests. So go for it!

    Take care,
    The Jade Ruby
