Volley! Allison asks everyone:

  1. End of the world and you could only listen to one song, read one paragraph, stanza, or chapter from a piece of literature, watch one scene from a movie, and eat one more dish? What would they be?
  2. What social icon had the greatest impact on you and why?
  3. Do you like the way women are currently portrayed in the media? Why? Or why not? If no, how would you like to see it evolve?

I´m sure that if tomorrow I answered to these questions I would probably change some of them, but today this is what comes to my mind:

    1. Song: Tu pelo (spanish song by La oreja de Van Gogh) or Imagine.

Reading: This is really hard, but right now what comes to my mind is this:

Ponyboy, I asked the nurse to give you this book so you could finish it. The doctor came in a while ago but I knew anyway. I keep getting tireder and tireder. Listen, I don’t mind dying now. It’s worth it. It’s worth saving those little kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for. Some of their parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth it. Tell Dally it’s worth it. I’m going to miss you guys. I’ve been thinking about it, and that poem, that guy that wrote it, he means you’re gold when you’re a kid, like green. When you’re a kid everything’s new, dawn. It’s just when you get used to everything that it’s day. Like the way you dig sunsets Pony, that’s gold. Keep it that way, it’s a good way to be. I want you to tell Dally to look at one. He’ll probably think you’re crazy but ask for me. I don’t think he’s ever really seen a sunset. And don’t be so bugged over being a greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There’s still lots of good in the world. Tell Dally, I don’t think he knows. Your buddy, Johnny.

    (From The Outsiders)

    Movie scene: youtube.com/watch?v=wbXtZE4KbbM (from Crash)

Dish: Lasagna or something cooked by my mum.

Social icon: I don´t have one in particular, there are many people who inspire me.

    3. Definetely a big NO. In most advertisments, movies, and magazines, women are portrayed as spectacular looking, with “perfect” faces and bodies, and they´re used to advertise the sexual part of women. Like you need to show through your body how desirable you are, as if that´s the only thing that matters.

I really don´t like to see how girls start playing that game since they´re so young, and they´re just imitating their idols.

The change I would like to see it´s if I started seeing more normal women in the media, comfortable with who they are, and showing the world that the image it´s not all. I like women who like and respect themselves and who make others respect them for who they are, and not for how they look.

Song – Wanted Dead Or Alive (Bon Jovi), because of the ‘take me if you can’ connotations. Effectively, it’s a refusal to go quietly and keep on fighting to the end.

Reading – Doc Manhattan centric part of Watchmen, where he debates the futility of life. Beautifully haunting and re-readable.

Movie – The opening of X-Men II with Nightcrawler. One of the best action scenes ever made.

Dish – fish finger sandwich. Go out in style.

Social Icon – probably Stan Lee. His comic-book work inspired a generation of people to take the medium seriously while, at the same time, investing it with a sense of fun. I strive to do the same with my comic-book writing.

No for the final question. The female gender is marginalised to a ridiculous degree, and even chaps like me who have a strong view of how strong and awesome women are is capable of supporting that marginalisation without thinking. There needs to exist a point where we see females are people in their own right, not just sexual figures or Mothers or in the whore/angel category. They’re far more complex than that.

End of the world and you could only listen to one song, read one paragraph, stanza, or chapter from a piece of literature, watch one scene from a movie, and eat one more dish? What would they be?

    Hi,
    To answer the questions;
    1. The song changes each month or so but either Queen – Who wants to live forever? or The Smiths – How soon is now? The later being my favourite song but at 10mins+ I wouldn’t be able to appreciate it. The book would be the last paragraph of The Silver Kiss, a fantastic vampire book. The movie scene would be from Blade Runner with Rutger Hauer’s immortal death line. The dish would be any kind of cake I could get my hands on! “Cake first and then the Universe!”
    2. I would say Christopher Reeve. I loved his acting career, but most importantly his will to go on with life despite his disability. He never gave up, never felt sorry for himself, always had hope and tried his best to help others. If only we all could be like that!
    3. I think generally the women heavily in media are too thin, either act or are portrayed as stupid and vacuous, and appear to be obsessed with the way they look (both fashion and make up/Nip\Tuck). Let’s see stronger women that leave their abusive partners, which have intelligent opinions about real matters in the world.

    1. Song — ‘Soar’ by Christina Aguilera
Literature — There is a poem called ”When Tomorrow Starts Without Me” that I just find beauitful and moving.
Movie Scene — When Gene Wilder sings ‘Pure Immigination’ from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Dish-Seafood alfredo with breadsticks and Mountain Dew

    2. Social Icon — Lois Lane, when I was six and first discovered ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventrues of Superman’ she instantly became my idol. She is the reason I am in college to be a journalist, I wanted, and still want to, be like her.

    3. Yes and no, it all depends on the things you are watching or how you view it. There are some examples where women are strong and kick ass and just take no holds bar. But then there are the versions of women that make you want to throw up. But the real story is that both those types of women exist in our world and to try and exclude or phase out certain ‘stereotypes’ would be under-representing some women of the population. Do I think it is perfect? No. But men don’t have it much easier either, you have your meatheads or nerds or artsy guys…no one sex has it easier than the other and that is okay with me because it teaches younger kids that there are many types of people out there and we need to be as accepting as possible. And with good parents there to guide them they will form their own opinions and thoughts and eventually cling to something they see and identify, feel apart of the human race a bit more.

Hi Allison, this is my response:

    1.
Song: “Padre Nuestro” by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (Argentinian Ska) or “November Rain” by Guns n’ Roses

Reading: mmmm is tough I have so many options is hard just to pick one but one of my top options would be this:

    Love by Pablo Neruda

“Because of you, in gardens of blossoming flowers I ache from the
    perfumes of spring.
    I have forgotten your face, I no longer remember your hands;
how did your lips feel on mine?
Because of you, I love the white statues drowsing in the parks,
the white statues that have neither voice nor sight.
I have forgotten your voice, your happy voice; I have forgotten
    your eyes.
Like a flower to its perfume, I am bound to my vague memory of
you. I live with pain that is like a wound; if you touch me, you will
    do me irreparable harm.
Your caresses enfold me, like climbing vines on melancholy walls.
I have forgotten your love, yet I seem to glimpse you in every
    window.
Because of you, the heady perfumes of summer pain me; because
of you, I again seek out the signs that precipitate desires: shooting
    stars, falling objects.”

    Social Icon:
Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé): he is not only the man why best played the most beautiful game in the world (Fútbol or Soccer) but he was also an example of an athlete ahead from his time. Even after retiring from playing he have never left the game, he has spent his life bringing Soccer to all the people, and giving back to the community. Even now he is still an example for any human being that is remotely interested in sports or soccer. Long life Oh Rey Pelé!

“When Pele made that 5th goal in that final game, I have to be honest and admit that I wanted to start clapping at him”
Sigvard Parling, Sweden defender in 1958 World Cup’s Final

“Before the game, I told to myself ‘Pelé is just meat and bone, like me’. Later I understood I was wrong”
Tarcisio Burgnich, Italian defender in 1970 World Cup’s Final

    3. I think the way media shows women is fake. You see women in magazines and the first thing a guy thinks is “these women dont exist” and they dont. Those “happy” super thin women with awsome bodies; first of all they are full of surgery most of them, they have eating disorders, and of course they are unhappy cuz they are never satisfied with their bodies. In my personal opinion I think is more sexy a woman that looks hot but normal and natural than a super hot fake plastic doll.
Im a marketeer and a solution would be try to make advertising with a different approach a more natural and human approach, it wont be easy, it wont be fast but at the long run I think it would be better.

An extra comment on this, something that really like about you Allison is that while being drop dead gorgeous you stiil look natural and normal, and every time I see Smallville or pictures of you, you reflect that bubbly personality of yours and that spark that would make any man fall completely in love. And as a “new” member of this community (since i have been getting into this blog for over 2 weeks or so) I have to say that I really like the way you think and the way you embrace life and enjoy every part of it. I think you would be an awsome person to be friends with.

    have a good day

“It Must Be Love” by Madness (a brilliantly simple and honest-to-goodness music that says I love you to whoever I want to say that to!)
1 Corinthians Chapter 13 (is all that allowed? If not the last verse!)
The Governors meeting scene from Blazing saddles (end the world on a laugh!)
    Chicken Caesar Salad

Social Icon? It should be Jesus Christ but I’m going out on a limb and say Doctor Who. A character who stands for individuality, creativity and living a fantastic life to the full!)

    3. Young women in the media are portrayed as either dominant and stroppy, or mindless bimbos, all concerned with looks rather than personality and moral character. Older women are ignored by the media. So no, I don’t like the way women are portrayed in the media. And I’m a man for goodness sake!

How will it evolve? I’d de-evolving. 100 years ago, Emmeline Pankhurst campaigned tirelessly in the UK to get votes for women, and occasionally was imprisoned for her beliefs. 40 years or so ago, Germaine Greer wrote the Female Eunuch, trying to raise the profile of womens liberation and equal rights. In 2009, all the media are interested in is whether Brittney, Lindsay or Jordan will get their tits out for the cameras! Our current fascination with the cult of celebrity is reducing public figures (both male and female) to the status of meat, to be displayed and gawped at by a gullible public. Thanks for listening! ;-)

    Question #1
Song: “I had a dream” from Abba
    Paragraph:
I believe that you can reach the point where there is no longer any difference between developing the habit of pretending to believe and developing the habit of believing.
    – Foucault’s Pendulum, Chapter 87 – Umberto Eco
Movie scene: The end of the “Men in Black” movie that shows the Earth like a little marble ball in the hands of greater creatures.
Eat: Cebiche with a lot of pepper sauce

    Question #2
Willie E. Coyote cause he is the icon of perseverance for me. He’s always failing on catch Roadrunner and, still, doesn’t give up on trying. Sometimes I feel like I give up on things too early….

    Question #3
My answer is not too much. I believe that the media are doing a great job on showing stronger character women instead all those dependent house wives in love for some powerful men. My problem is that they are freeing the frail women image and trapping them in a beauty stereotype. So now we are slave of crazy diets and gyms, in pro a perfect body shape, of face cosmetics, hair cosmetics, body cosmetics, etc. We just changed our jail cell from kitchen to a beauty salon. I still feel like a prisoner….

Wow…great questions! I’m really going to have to think about these…let’s see…

1.) Song: either “Fire on the Mountain” by Hanson, or “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, it’d be a good toss up between the two.

Reading: “For our World”, a poem by Mattie Stephanek. (If you haven’t read this beautiful piece of poetry, I highly recommend it.)

Movie: Hmm, this is a tough one. Probably the opening scene of “Beauty and the Beast”, it’s always been my favorite movie.

One more dish: my mom’s soup beans and fried noodles.

2.) Social icon: I would have to say the band Hanson. Not only have I been deeply moved and inspired by the music that they have created throughout the years; but I have been deeply inspired by the actions they are taking to make a difference in this world. I have been inspired to take the chance and express myself through my own music and also take a step forward and take action against things that I can do to make a difference in the world by simply doing little and simple things, that in the end, make a huge contribution. I cannot express how much of an impact and meaning has been brought to my life through their inspiration and their music.
I would also have to say Mattie Stephanek. I can’t even express in words all of the reasons why. He was truly an angel on this Earth.

3.) I’m not really sure how I feel about this. What I do think is that we, as a world and community, need to be building up the positive aspects and trying to focus on the truly meaningful things, not only in women being portrayed in the media, but simply the media in general. Tough question to ponder, I may need some more time to really think about this one.

    #1:
Song: either “Mad World” by Gary Jules or “Who wants to live forever” by Queen… or Monty Pythons “Always look on the bright side of life” if I’m in the mood
Book: “I Have a Rendezvous With Death” by Alan Seeger
Move: Lord Of the Rings – Return of the King; the scene in which the orks are already in Gondor. The last survivors are barricading behind a gate and Pippin, afraid of death asks Gandalf what comes after death and he says “End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path… One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass… And then you see it. White shores… and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.” Well long story short… this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoa4lGKxbw4
    Dish: hmmmm…. I love turkey

    #2:
Joss Whedon(Creator of Buffy, Firefly, Dollhouse) – His point of view at feminism, gay rights, religion, pacifism and many other liberal thoughts came at the right time as I was 15/16 and started to question everything I’ve been taught before

    #3:
Well it has improved since the ’70/’80 where women were the damsel in distress most the time. It’s interesting that comicbooks had strong women (Wonder Woman, Rogue, Kitty Pryde,…) long before TV and movies.
I see two ways women are currently portrayed.
Media that is supposed to mirror real life, like ads, reality shows, the gutter press etc: Women are still portrayed as sex symbols. And stuff like [Insert your home countries name here]‘s Next Topmodel (the ad for anorexia) doesn’t help at all. I also noticed that in family sitcoms the women are still most of the time at home to take care of the kids.
Scifi/fantasy: Not only physically strong women(Buffy, Supergirl, Starbuck,…) are common nowadays, but also average women who do strong things (Willow, Chloe, Laura Roslin,..).

    1. One song: toss up between “Feed the Birds” from Mary Poppins, “Tree Tree Tree” by Mr. Rogers and “Hey Ruth” by Lionel Neykov. “Tree Tree Tree” just might win out!
One paragraph or stanza: Gee, that’s a tough one. Here’s a simple one that would do from The Giving Tree: “‘I don’t need very much now,’ said the boy, ‘just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired.’ ‘Well,’ said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, ‘Well,an old stump is good for sitting and resting. Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.’
And the boy did. And the tree was happy.”
One scene from a movie: again, that’s tough! But if it was the end of the world, I would probably have to watch either the scene in Anne of Green Gables where Anne and Diana pledge eternal friendship, The one where Anne runs to Marilla’s arms inviting her to drink in the wildflowers, or the scene were Gil scolds Anne for mooning and pitching…or maybe the very last scene…”I just want you.” Really, do I have to choose just one?
    One dish: just fried okra.
    2. social icon who’s impacted me most: at this point? probably Byron Katie.
3.Women in the media: I think the way women are portrayed physically in media generally is not realistic for the majority of the population. What we see as beautiful is definitely effected by the media. As far as the stereotypical weak woman, I think we’re seeing more and more of the opposite, stronger, smarter women. I’d like to see a realistic balance, not just an evolution in the media, but in the real world. There’s a problem for sure with such a narrow definition of beauty, but what about the narrow definition of success in life? How does the media define success? I would like to see smart, strong, real women more in view. Inspire us real people, Media! But, I guess the question remains, what sells and what inspires? I like to look at a beautiful person as much as I enjoy a beautiful painting. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t benefit from or appreciate something less beautiful with perhaps more meaning or depth. Now I’m just meandering, but there’s my thoughts!

    1. One song…that would easliy be “Closer” by Kings of Leon.

One Chapter from a book would have to be Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.

One scene from a movie would be the new version of Pride and Prejudice, the scene in the rain when Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth to marry him and she says
“From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry”….I love that scene!!!

One dish to eat….Pancakes with strawberries!!!

    2. My social icon would be Nelson Mandela, there is really no other person that I can think of that has had a greater social impact on the world then he has….he is a universal symbol of peace, and perseverance!

    3. Do I like the way woman are portrayed in the media….for the most part no…..I feel that woman have been reduced to nothing more then shallow sluts, that are only concerned with the way they look, and how much money a man has!!! It’s prevelant not only in the American, but the World media as well….Woman like me whom are considered average looking, feel inadequate. And rap music has made woman out to be worth nothing more then a sexual encounter. I would like to see men showing respect to woman, the way that we deserve. i would listen to Lithium by Evanescence.

movie scene, this is hard… lemme think… maybe this will change but it’ll be… I really can’t think of anything right now.

the paragraph from a book i would read is
“It is not righteous that ye turn your faces towards East or West; but it righteous to believe in God and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves (my note- that is, helping to free them); to be steadfast in prayer and give Zakat (regular charity); to fulfill the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God fearing.
    (The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 2 Verse 177)

What would i eat- a footlong subway- Seafood Sensation- lobster, extra cheese, with tomatoes, sweet peppers, pineapples, cucumbers and garlic sauce (share half with a friend). :)

Anybody who volunteers to work for the good of the community is an icon for me. It doesn’t matter if millions of people love you or not. You do it because it comes from your heart.

I don’t enjoy the superficiality that the media portrays. There are beautiful girls with altruistic personalities and good hearts but putting down the one that doesn’t think she’s thin enough or worthy enough because the media has an ‘acceptable’ *frowns* standard is one sure way to send someone into depression. Think of how many lives are ruined because of the constant sublimal messages being ingrained into our brains (oh come on, it’s outright blatant). I keep thinking of Susan Boyle, how everyone assumed she would probably sound like a frog because she it looked like she didn’t know what a hairbrush looked like yet she sounded so beautiful. Cinderella had it easy- she was already beautiful and hard working, all she needed was a check and a shopping spree. But Susan got the better end of the deal- respect.

    Take care everyone!

2)Barack Obama because he was not only the first black president in America, but he is also trying to bring peace to the world and encouraging us to do the same.

    3) No, to be honest and for reasons I don’t think you expected. Do you happen to notice that there are always some sorts of scandals towards a woman, never a man? Do you know what I mean? Here are my answers:

    1. Song I think it would have to be I’m Yours by Jason Mraz, book def The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks or A Child Called it by David Pelzer, I love A walk to remember so maybe something from there, to eat I would choose my dads Chicken Alfredo pasta because of the way he makes it no one can do it like him. Okay I guess those are them but I think maybe later on in life I would change them haha

    2. I don’t really have anyone like famous or anything like that but I think the greatest social Icon would have to be my friend she went through so much in her life yet she stands strong to this day. It makes me look at the little things I worry about & say “how dumb do i sound” you know? She just has such an amazing quality to her & presence that you just want to be a better person because of her. She had a horrible child experience & so to me she has had the most impact on me because she let me be her friend & actually opened up to me I don’t know to me that was the biggest impact & special person

    3. Um kind of sometimes because women are portrayed alot of the times as like “the sex object” or just something that a guy can have & I don’t know to me that isn’t really good or the women are portrayed as like ditzy or something. But alot of times I have seen women you being one of them portrayed as more than that not only smart, but sophisticated & not just the quality of the inside but also women are portrayed as more beautiful instead of sexy & all that which is great to me! So if we had more women like yourself & other women I admire than I think the future would be great for us :)

    Okay those are my answers

    2. Martin Luther King Jr. for teaching people how to dream.

    3. Overall, No. Its a weird thing because most people can reasonably say objectifying and demeaning women is wrong but never really change the way they think and do to present any significant amount of change. I think the key is renewing our sense of equality. If all people are viewed and accepted as equal we will see significant progress.

Poem “Why Worry” by H.B. 1924

    So Many things perplex us,
    So many things go wrong,
    And ‘oft life is fleeting
    the tear-drops threaten
To drown the sound of song.
For life is not all sunshine,
As you and I well know.
But the longest life is fleeting,
And we haven’t far to go.

So why should we be sorry,
    For things we cannot change?
And why be sad and worry
With our care kept at short range?
‘Tis best to take the long view,
For it lightens half the load,e’s weary road.

So let’s be up and doing,
With a smile for every care,
    For nothing is accomplished
    Unless we do and dare.
And the heart that’s always singing,
    Chases fear and care away;
    Nearer,ever nearer, bringing
Tranquil rest, that ends the day

Men who could inspire others with their words and deeds. Men who dared to bring a little hope and justice into an otherwise cold world. Unfortunately, men like that usually wind up in some mad assassins cross-hairs.

    3. The American media, it seems, treats everything and everyone in this land of hope, freedom, and no mercy, the same as any other corporate entity. That is to say with a total lack of humanity. There are too many prying eyes offering a micropscopic analysis of one unfortunate gaffe or another; far too much shock and awe and too little follow through. So no, I don’t like the way women are portrayed or, as it seems to me, pressured to change themselves so drastically to please a constant and shifting perception of beauty. But, then again, I really don’t like the way anything is portrayed by the media.

Social Icon: I am such an Idealist that it is not very hard to inspire me. As long as the icon comes across a genuinely authentic, I am suseptible. I have a knack for spotting phonies.

Women in Media: I guess it is all relative, but as a whole, no. The insane focus on looks and size! It does not breed a healthy atmosphere. As a teacher, how am I supposed to tell girls that come to me upset because they have been teased about weight or looks that those are temporal and fleeting things? They are surrounded by it in everything that they see? Movies, internet, magazines, TV, etc… How am I supposed to convince them that there is so much more that they can uniquely contribute to the world if only they would focus more on whatever it is that they love? As a woman, I even struggle with those things due to the pressures to look perfect.

How can it evolve? Well…for starters, people should stop spending time and money on tabloid non-sense claiming “On No! So & So Has Cellulite!” or “Britney Gained 15 lbs.! Is She Unhappy?” It is stupid. But, I don’t blame the media as much as I blame the people who buy it. If there were not a market for it, then it would be left alone.

I understand that people have a fasination with the Celebrity lifestyle, but what if instead there was a focus in the media on the positive. Let’s look for someone who is willing to share how in between movies she “insert positive headline that would encourage ladies to focus on humanity and not a facade” I don’t know if I am making my thought process clear, but…..just thoughts.

It was always something that I wanted to do so I found strength through many different actresses from the time I was 12 up until now (26). I have a very long list of people I’ve been inspired by

For the most part I’d say “not entirely”. I think there are many different types of roles out there for women, but I don’t think people should be type casted because of the way they look. It’s hard because people SAY that women shouldn’t have to always be thin and beautiful on TV but in the end that SEEMS to be everyones expectations, whether they admit it or not. Quite frankly I think it sucks and it’s something that’s going to take the media (and the public) a while to get over.

Women are portrayed as too thin, silly, stupid, tediously, hysterical, intriguer and slutty drama queens. That’s why I chose so carefully what to watch on TV or what article to read etc. Luckily there are other, better, portrays as well. As different as women are as different should they be portrayed including a normal weight (e.g. 165 cm = between 55 and 65 kilos). That would be much more interesting and set a much better example especially for girls. Too many girls became the way most women have been portrayed in media and think that this is alright. Chapter: John 21 in the Bible

Scene from a movie: This sounds kind of arrogant, but I’m an aspiring filmmaker, so it would likely be a scene from one of my own films (assuming by the time the world ends I’ve gotten the gumption made a full one) just to remind myself that I put out something that affected the world.

Dish: A sweetly marinated steak cooked to a perfect medium. I lieks me some steak :)

Which Social Icon had the most impact on you and why?

This is an easy one. Christ Jesus. I’m a Christian. He saved my life, in ways more literal one would think, apart from the obvious.

Do you like the way women are currently portrayed in the media? Why? Or why not? If no, how would you like to see it evolve?

I think that women are portrayed in the media better than a lot of people want to believe. It’s not perfect, and in some cases it’s absolutely horrid, but in my opinion there are very few things important enough that people should fight to change, and at the moment, this isn’t one of them. The feminist revolution in the sixties brought women to the most decent and respected place they are ever going to be in the media or in any shade of the public spectrum. Saying that things are so terrible now diminishes that.

#2: Superman, since I was a kid and in love with the comics’ and George Reeves’ and then Christopher Reeve’s versions. That’s why I finally started watching SV in S4. My mom(!!!) had started in S1, because she thought Tom was cute, and kept begging me to watch. I refused to watch for years, sure CW would ruin it with a snotty, annoying, mouthy, overdressed, slick guy as Clark (c’mon – after Dean Cain, it would be hard to get a better, more likable Clark, and the CW doesn’t exactly tend to cast or write intelligence over looks). Finally gave in – bought the first three seasons’ DVDs and started with the first episode. Was hooked, and not just because Tom is cute (that certainly didn’t hurt).

Was very disappointed they didn’t have CK & Chloe hook up for real after the first redK episode. Felt that way even more after they took Lana down some rather strange and unpleasant paths, yet kept CK wanting to be with her. “But Chloe is RIGHT THERE…” Looking forward to S9…

Anyway… Superman. The idea of. Even though he’ll never completely fit in as a human, he’s here. He tries to do the right thing and doesn’t get depressed for long, and he knows that he needs people (unlike Batman, who is cool in his own way but who tries to push people away and wallow in his problems). He isn’t afraid to stand up to bullies even if it means he might have to take a few punches. Something good to live up to. I’ve told my kids it’s worth trying to do the right thing and not give up, even if it doesn’t always work out the first time.

With all the disappointing real “leaders” out there – the “fabulous” politicians who turn out to be hurting their families on the side; the religious leaders who aren’t following their own tenets; the dictators; the many crazed groups of people around the world who feel it’s OK to kill others who don’t believe as they do… Superman is worth looking up to.

#1: End of the world choices – this is the hardest. My favorites often change with my mood.

Dish: probably Breyers’ mint chip ice cream. A longtime favorite that I keep coming back to. Or Cheerios with milk.

Song: In-a-gadda-da-vita (drag out the end!) or – more likely – American Pie. CTYers out there will know what I mean.

Stanza/paragraph/chapter: well, the perfect match would be Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice”:
    Some way the world will end in fire;
    Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire,
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction, ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.

That was on a half blue, half red poster on the cafeteria wall in my school in 3rd grade. I used to eat lunch facing it almost every day so I could read it.

Other choices would be Shelley’s “Ozymandias” or Frost’s “Road Not Taken”.

But you asked for literature… Not sure I have a favorite paragraph/chapter, but I’d go back to something like The Phantom Tollbooth, Anne of Green Gables, or The Secret Garden for familiarity. Closure.

Scene from a movie: difficult decision. The world would probably do its final explosion while I was trying to decide which one to queue up and watch. Colin Firth’s infamous Darcy scene? The beginning of Highlander or The Princess Bride? Part of Room with a View? Something more recent? Not a clue.

late to the dance here but…
    #1- one song- probably “Let It Be” as it is still beautiful the 3,000th time I hear it and also would be rather appropriate;
    one paragraph, stanza, or chapter from a piece of literature- again a pretty appropriate piece would be Hamlet’s soliloquy. I once had a job where I drove a truck around all day long with no radio or anything…it was a mind-numbing job and I used to pass the time by reciting passages of Shakespeare…when you take apart a piece of literature, especially the greatest playwright, you learn so much more than you were expecting;
    watch one scene from a movie- my favorite movie is Mister Roberts (Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon)…the final scene of the movie has Lemmon’s character, Ensign Pulver reading mail and then barging into the captain’s (played by James Cagney) billet…it’s a fabulously dramatic, comedic, touching, fierce sequence…I love it and I’d want to see it once last time;
and eat one more dish- a fabulous plate of pasta would be great!

#2- Wow, that’s a tough question…I’d probably say Muhammed Ali. I’m old enough to have seen Ali fight (though not in his prime in the mid 60s mind you). But when I was a kid, Ali was the biggest athlete in the world and there was still some lingering animosity against him from his draft refusal- so there was the great dynamic of this twin character of the hero and the villain, encased in this one spectacular being who talked like virtually no one else you ever heard, and backed it up. He seemed to have such a great sense of himself, despite at the time being the single most well known figure in the world. Yet he also had a consciousness that sought out societal problems in a different way- sometimes going too far- but never in an anarchaic way.
#3- I can only speak as a man, but as a father of daughters as well…I guess we are in a post-post-feminist phase where women, especially young women, are now using their looks as another tool in their positioning themselves in society. I’m not sure how I feel about it.
As a red-blooded man, I enjoy seeing a beautiful woman, but I’ve also been conditioned by a feminist society that doing so is somehow objectionable. As a father of young daughters I hate to think they will be objectified in their lives as they grow older.
Yet there is this new paradigm where some women are taking control of the ways in which they are objectified (can women be ‘subjectified’?) in the media by reclaiming the power over their image and using it to advance themselves. It’s a very strange, often unnerving, concept for me since I’m not sure how I’m supposed to react to this. I think, though, that it’s a bit like a relationship:
the phsyical attraction gets you in the room, but the emotional attraction keeps you in the room. Thus, one hopes, that if a women is in a position to control the way she is portrayed (and there can never be perfect, total control), her beauty is yet another tool in her kit, but there must be more ‘there’ there, or in the end we are but skin deep.

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong; “It’s true. Everybody loves his illusions.”; the scene where Belle chose to be with the Beast despite his looks keeping in mind only his kind heart in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST; My mom’s spaghetti.

What social icon had the greatest impact on you and why?

Mother Teresa. Despite her poor conditions, she reached out to people in need of help disregarding their status, looks and beliefs keeping only in her mind that we are all alike…all needing help in one way or another.

Do you like the way women are currently portrayed in the media? Why? Or why not? If no, how would you like to see it evolve?

There are times I can say I do like how women are being portrayed in media especially when the women in question are shown as headstrong, passionate, compassionate and loving ones. There are times though that I find women character portrayals infuriating especially those that show women weak minded, stupid, dependent or too independent or proud or too much of a martyr. I am not saying that I dont have any of those characteristics but I hate seeing it on TV. peace.

    End of the world:
I’d recollect memories of my experiences of those with whom I’ve shared love, joy, laughter, happiness, discovery, etc… those memories are more valuable than any writing or performance.

Social Icon: The character Spock from Star Trek. For showing the control and suppression of emotions is possible, and at different times, appropriate, or not appropriate.

    Women in the media:
Oh for sure portrayed better in TV/Movies than they were from the 70′s back.
(How many times have they had Chloe “scream like a girl” when discovering something shocking/scarry/horrible?)
On the other hand, the hiring of only “super good looking” women for roles or jobs hasn’t changed one bit. Humanity is quite balanced in looks, and I imagine there’s plenty more talent looking as “normal” as Susan Boyle that goes undiscovered.

PLUS THOSE WOMEN IN INJECT GOD KNOWS WHAT IN TO THEIR BODIES TO LOOK LIKE THAT SO THAT IS NOT THEIR NATURAL BEAUTY

    1. Song would be Battle of One-30 Seconds to Mars, I’d read Revelations 19:2, I’d watch the last scene of Knowing, and I’d eat a Korean dish called Pulgogi
    2. The person who had the most impact on me isn’t a social icon. So I’d have to say nobody on this one.
    3. No, I don’t like how women are portrayed in the media today. The view that women are not beautiful or even sexually desired by men if they are not thin is getting real old. And the thought that a woman can’t be in to stuff guys mainly like is getting old too. The media seems to put more emphasis on women who fit the stereotypical thin and ‘feminine’ criteria. I’d love the media to follow me so everyone can see that a not thin short chic who loves sports, video games, and action movies, likes guys and is still a cool person!

song: Brian Tyler’s Inama Nushif from Children of Dune. There’s a lot going on within the context of the miniseries at the time the song is played. All of the scenes are highly emotionally charged and the song itself is very moving.

literature: The last chapter in the last book of Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series. It would be rather ironic, considering it’s the end of the world and the series has a strong theme about living your life to the fullest. I absolutely love the characters though and I’d like to read about them one more time.

scene: Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight, the scene where he’s videotaping a man dressed up like Batman. The entire clip is 100% perfection for a character that’s immensely complicated. I think they should have released it as a trailer, it impresses me every time I see it.

dish: A really good steak, potato, red wine, and cheese cake. Mmmmmmm.

    Social Icon:
This seems a little trite in my head but Joss Whedon has influenced me a lot. My friends and I have had many conversations about what good stories contain, what moves us, and how to express it all and we’ve drawn examples and concepts from Joss more than any other single creator.

    Women in the media:
I’m disappointed in how sexed up and dumbed down everything is. I think some of the problems depend somewhat on who’s viewing the media though. Sexist people look through a sexiest lens, children don’t understand a lot of themes, and the uneducated or unworldly view things from within the box they keep their minds in. There’s too much going on. Media is very very busy and I think that detracts from universal values. Concerning women in the media though I’d like to see more intelligent, powerful, and independent women whose merits and achievements are talked about independently of their races, levels of attractiveness, and relations to men.

    3. I think the women are portrayed in many ways, which one corresponds to a kind of person. Yes, there are many women who submit themselves to man, who think themselves as low creatures or whatever, but there are also those who are very independent, who make their way into the world and leave a real mark.

The many portraits of women we see and hear everyday should not dictate our view of ourselves in any way. We must be what we want to be, not only what’s expected of us. We are the ones who must have the highest expectations, not the others.

Dear Allison, you said that if you could release yourself from one inhibition, that would be caring what others think of you. Okay, somehow, being a public person, this is /almost/ impossible, BUT… You can’t rule your life or your actions by what the others may or may not think. Don’t they say that not even Jesus pleased everybody? That’s very much true in many aspects of the human life. And I like to believe that sometimes… sometimes… that phrase from Velvet Goldmine is pretty much true: “Times, places, people. They’re all speeding up. So to cope with this evolutionary paranoia strange people are chosen who through their art can move progress more quickly.”

See? I emphasize “through their art can move progress more quickly”. Some people, the ones who are in this public position, MUST assume some leadership – be rebel, defy the conventions and so on, in order to open the eyes of many people (exactly the ones who admire them), people which wouldn’t even consider minimum changes otherwise.

Oh, mein gott, I’m so sorry, I came here only to answer your question and look where I got: I’m really babbling…

So sorry, I’m going now. Have a nice week!

    1) Song – One Moment More by Mindy Smith
    Literature – The
Movie Scene- Smallville ( I know it’s not a movie), when Clark and Chloe dance together at the Spring Formal, end of season 1.
Dish – Greek Salad & Pizza.

    2) You Miss Mack. From the moment I first saw you in Smallville as Chloe. I loved your character so much, and after discovering this blog, I admire you even more! I can’t leave these guys out: Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, Corbin Bleu, etc. I’m a huge HSM fan :) . Aswell as JB (Jonas Brothers). Hehe.

    3) I absolutely hate how women are portrayed as objects. “Things” that belong to men, whom they can control. It’s disgusting. And how this is how you have to look to be pretty, or noticed. Reality check, nobody’s perfect! Everyone is beautiful however they are.

    This is awesome!!!!!
    Take care!

    1. I would probably listen to a Michael Jackson song, read a passage from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, watch Anne and Gilbert get together one more time at the end of Anne of Avonlea, and I would eat food from my favorite Thai restaurant. The dish would be Sweet and Sour Chicken with Mango sticky rice for dessert.

    2. What social icon had the greatest impact on you and why?

I don’t really know! Jesus, Shirley Temple Black, different writers and artists, musicians, humanitarians, everyday people who make a difference, etc…have all inspired me in many ways, and all in different ways.

    3. Do you like the way women are currently portrayed in the media? Why? Or why not? If no, how would you like to see it evolve?

Tricky question. And the simple answer is no, even though that’s not always the case. I don’t like the way women are portrayed in media all the time because they can be exploited and portrayed as objects. Also, the media puts out a certain image to young girls of how they should look and behave, even though it is not realistic. The media helps to perpetuate bad body image. I would like in the future for women to be portrayed less as stereotypes and more as strong women! Different types of women. All shapes, sizes, religions, backgrounds, etc…Sometimes I do think we’re headed in the right direction, then other times I feel like we take a step backwards. Part of the problem is that women sometimes allow themselves to be seen as objects rather than as a person. I think Transformers 2 is a very good example of how the Media portrays women negatively. I do think it can be changed though.

my one song would be peace in the valley by elvis.my one chapter would be the final chapter of to kill a mockingbird.my one scene from a movie would be jim civesal hanging on the cross in passion of the christ,it always reminds me to not waste the life that he sacrificed to give me mine.and my one dish would have to be my mom’s famous rice dish.can;t tell you what’s in it family secret. My social icon would have to be the men and women that keep us safe everyday but never get noticed for it nor want to. Finally i believe the media is the major trigger of girls with eating disorders and body issues. If you don’t look like the magazines then there is something wrong with you.I hope one day to see women noticed for their talents and achievements and not for how they look.

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. The last paragraph of Pride and Prejudice. The final scene from Return of the Jedi. Lasagne.

    2. What social icon had the greatest impact on you and why?

I don’t know really. I’m sure someone else who knows me well might be able to answer that.

Not really actually. They’re used to advertise things in a way that really isn’t necessary. It’s just some media idiots that have a degree in business analysis or some crap like that saying that it makes more money this way. Screw them.

    Hi,
The answers to Chloe’s (ALLISONS) question would be as follows:
1(i) The song would be ”Have i told you i ache for you”
1(ii) The scene would be when Chloe i.e you write the letter to Clark Kent AKA SUPERMAN.You take a chance for love.
1(iii)The dish would be your favorite since who cares about food when the world is coming to an end.

2.Social icon would be Jesus, because he changed the world for the better.(He was very social, trust me)

3.Women, now that a long long conversation. There is the good with the bad , with the occasional overdose of the bad, but if women are shown as powerful as you are on SMALLVILLE,i.e with a heart of gold and the power to MOVE MOUNTAINS. That would be nice to.

i’d start by reading the ending of “Winter of our discontent” by John Steinbeck, i’d grab myself a green apple, and then watch the final scene of “The legend of 1900″, where 1900 chats with his dearest friend Max Tooney, and then end it all with the song “Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria (Into Eternity)” from Vangelis.

the social icon who inspired me most, well… probably he’s not that much of a social icon, but anyways… is Isaac Asimov. His true genius revealed a new world to me, from the point of view of his literature or his research.

And about your third question… most of the famous women tend to believe that looks and fabulous life means everything. lately i haven’t seen a band of girls, or a lead singer that won’t have stunning looks, but no talent at all… there are a few world wide women who indeed please the eye, with their grace, with their manner of handling their lives and all… most women these days try to make themselves known through any means possible, living by the concept, that even bad publicity is good.

    Once again, nice topics :)

    1) one song : most probably classical music (Vivaldi Largo or Bach/Gounod – Ave Maria sung by Bartoli or Keith Jarrett the Khöl concert or Bach Aria or the adagio from Albinoni… ). I think when you’ve heard that, you can leave this world feeling complete!!

    - One paragraph from a piece of literature : this is harder! why not something from Emile Zola. Or why not the end of Cyrano de Bergerac.
    - one scene from a movie : Schindler list ( the end when he realizes he could have saved more people. Just inverting).
    - one dish : of I can’t answer that! lol A french dessert but what? A fruit tart.

    2) social icon : one again, this is hard! lol that would be someone who showed us that, when you really want it and have the courage to act on it, one person can change many and by that, the world.Fortunately, some people have to show the way. Martin Luther King, Gandhi, but so many stay unknow…

    3) Women in the media : lol I see that for this question, most agrees. I don’t like the fact that we sell images instead of ideas. Some actresses or other wellknown women should use their image to show an example and try to change things because if those persons don’t, how could we in the shadow? All this “commercial stuff” around women is just business and that’s really not the best the world can offer us. How cares who’s the hottest woman of the year? This is totally irrelevant! Who can say what beauty is and who are we to judge? It makes us forget there are really more important things in life than “plastic icons”. I know that’s the film/modeling industry that wants that but if not so many people were interested in that, they wouldn’t do it. So I guess it’s our fault too. Fortunately, most women don’t degrade themselves and the “woman image” to such practices. Of course, I can still appreciate art photography that shows woman graciousness.
